We'll meet @ the parking area for Mt. Watatic on Route 119 in Ashburnham MA and carpool from there in order to spot cars at the parking area across from the Windblown Ski Area on Turnpike Road (Routes 123/124) in New Ipswich, NH. We'll cross the road to enter the Windblown Ski Area and follow the yellow triangles marking the Wapack Trail. The ascent up Barrett Mountain is moderately steep, but once you are there you're rewarded with some awesome vistas along the ridge line. Besides Barrett Mountain, this hike will take us to the peaks of New Ipswich Mountain, Pratt Mountain, Nutting Hill and Mount Watatic before we descend back down to Route 119. We won't be able to hike thru Windblown if there is snow on the ground and they are open for cross country or snow shoeing.

What you need to know:

This is not your typical Tortoise hike. This is the only way to complete the Wapack Trail system in NH. This hike can not be broken up into shorter distances.

Hikers: Please tell me about yourself. Please provide me examples of the 10 most recent hikes you have done, the dates you did those hikes, the distance you hikes and how long the hike took to complete. Also tell me what winter attire you have for winter hiking. Any hikers who have been no shows on previous hikes I have organized will not be allowed on this hike, sorry.

Estimated Distance: 9.8 miles (subject to change). Hard Core Hike. I will be screening participants. No Guests. No dogs.

Mt Watatic Elevation: 1832 feet

Nutting Hill: 1625 feet

Pratt Mountain Elevation: 1817 feet

New Ipswich Mountain Elevation: 1880 feet

Barrett Mountain Elevation: 1854 feet

Event Rating:: Moderate/Strenuous.

This level is used for challenging hikes that fall somewhere between the "moderate" and "difficult" ratings. Although the elevation gain falls within the criteria for "moderate" , we'll be hiking for about 10 miles up and down some steep sections including places with difficult footing , especially on the descents.

We move at the pace of the slowest hiker

Duration: Plan on being out for at least 8 Hours. However, actual duration

depends on trail conditions, temperature and the group itself Dont sign up if youve made plans for later in the day. The Event Host(s) is/are not responsible for getting you back on time.

This is a group event. We start together, stay together and finish together. We follow the leaders instructions. We support each other should circumstances require teamwork. If you decide to leave the group at any time, you are on your own.

Please remember that your Event Organizers are volunteers, the event is free and we are all adults. The people who have the best times on these hikes are those who stay loose and roll with things as they happen. If you need everything to run perfectly, this hike is not for you.

We hike in light rain or showers, but heavy rain or extreme weather cancels.

Bring water (three liters), and lunch/snacks. Wear hiking boots (not sneakers). No cotton, bring gloves and winter clothing. Protect yourself against deer ticks and dress in layers. Bring headlamp, microspikes, layers and poles.
