Hike #30 - At just over 4 miles to the peak, this hike might not seem too difficult, but it covers 3,900 feet of elevation gain. More important, most of this hike will take place above 8,000 feet of elevation, so you will feel a noticeable difference in breathing if you've never hiked at this altitude. The last mile to the summit can take as long as an hour depending on your pace. Just to be clear, this hike is not a walk in the park - it grades out as difficult on most hiking websites - AND ADD TO THAT THE FACT THAT IT IS GOING TO BE VERY HOT. DEPENDING ON THE WEATHER FORECAST, I MAY MOVE THE START TIME UP AN HOUR SO BE SURE TO CHECK BACK THE DAY BEFORE. We will meet at the outhouses/trailhead to Ski Hut trail at Falls Road and Mt. Baldy Road in Manker Flats, which is about 15 minutes up the road past the Mt. Baldy Lodge/Restaurant. If you don't know where that is, drive all the way to the end of Mt Baldy Road where it hits the parking lot for the ski lift, turn around and back track about a quarter mile. We will hit the trail at 8am.

Unlike the hike on August 5, this time we will hike up and down Ski Hut trail, so total distance is about eight miles. Total hike time plus a short break at the ski hut and an extended break at the peak will be around 5-6 hours. We will eat lunch when done at The Lodge down in Baldy Village.

DEHYDRATION AND HEAT STROKE ARE VERY REAL CONCERNS ON A HIKE IN THESE CONDITIONS. BECAUSE OF THE HEAT, I WOULD EXPECT THAT EVERYONE WILL HAVE ADEQUATE HIKING EXPERIENCE AND WILL CARRY NO LESS THAN 4 LITERS OF WATER--THAT'S A TYPICAL CAMELBAK RESERVOIR AND A NALGENE BOTTLE. DO NOT COUNT ON THERE BEING ANY WATER AVAILABLE AT THE SKI HUT (ONLY AVAILABLE IF IT'S OPEN, WHICH IS DOUBTFUL IN THE HEAT) OR TO FILTER ELSEWHERE ON THE TRAIL. IF EVERYTHING GOES AS PLANNED, I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT SHARING AND RATIONING WATER BECAUSE SOMEONE SHOWS UP UNPREPARED. PLEASE BE PREPARED. ANYTHING LESS IS UNFAIR TO EVERYONE ELSE ON THIS STRENUOUS HIKE.

You will need a parking Adventure Pass to park along the street by the trailhead. You can get an annual pass for $30 at REI or at the Visitors Center across the road from the Mount Baldy Lodge, or you can get a day pass for $5 at the Visitors Center. I HAVE AN EXTRA ONE THAT IS GOOD UNTIL JUNE 2018 THAT I'LL SELL ANYONE FOR $15.

If anyone has any questions, please shoot me a message or post a comment.
