Come join us as we hike up the Mt. Wilson trail from Sierra Madre to Orchard Camp.

This is a 7 mile round trip (same way in and out)hike with approximately 2000' elevation gain. A fit beginner can do this, but with the elevation gainI'd say it's an intermediate otherwise. Orchard Camp is the halfway point up to Mt. Wilson from Sierra Madre. Duration: about 4 hours.

The historic Mt. Wilson trail climbs steeply, quickly moving hikers away from suburbia and into the peacefulness of Little Santa Anita Canyon. The camp was a mountain resort until 1940, and some stone foundations of the buildings are still visible. The trail (off and on)has been used for one of the oldest races in California starting back in 1908. The original trail was built in 1864 by Benjamin Wilson. Lizzie's Trail Inn is a museum just off of Mira Monte Ave where we'll be starting that is open 10AM to 12PM on Saturday's only, so we'll be stopping by there on the way out.

Bring water, something to snack on at the top, and a light wrap just in case.

From the intersection of Mira Monte Avenue and Mt. Wilson Trail Drive we'llwalk up the drive about 150 yards to the beginning of the marked trail on the left thenfollow the trail briefly up to a ridge top road where you're greeted by another trail sign. We'll veer to the left and follow the road to the main trail as it begins to climb, high on the western slope of Little Santa Anita Canyon.

From the 210 Foothill Freeway in Arcadia, exit Santa Anita Avenue and drive north. Turn left (west) on Sierra Madre Blvd. and drive 0.9 mile to Mountain Trail Avenue. Turn right (north) and drive 0.5 mile to where Mountain Trail Ave ends but turns left as Mira Monte Ave. Turn left here. Immediately on your right is Mount Wilson Trail Drive. Park in this area on the street, either on the lower end of Mount Wilson Trail Drive or on Mira Monte.
