PATC Map 9 / VA Bus
$25 (nonmembers $28) + park fee/pass. Long hike: 10 mi., 3400 ft. ascent, 900 ft. descent. Short hike: 7 mi., 2400 ft. ascent, 300 ft. descent.
Its the dog days of August time for another reprieve from the D.C. heat. In this forest-shaded outing in Shenandoahs North District, well start at the intersection of Rts. 653 and 612 on the east side of the Blue Ridge and gradually ascend the Thornton River, Hull School, Fork Mtn. and Piney Ridge Trails to reach the Appalachian Trail. At the AT well turn north, with moderate hikers following the trail to Rattlesnake Point on the Skyline Drive, long hikers soon veering off to trek on to Hogback Overlook via the Piney Branch, Pole Link and Sugarloaf Trails.

Virginia Bus Routing: Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes before departure times listed below. All departure points are Metro accessible; however, if you are driving, please use only the Vienna Metro departure point, as parking is extremely limited at other locations.
Departure points and times are as follows:
DC - 16th and I St., NW, at 8:00 a.m. SHARP. 16th and I is near the Farragut West and McPherson Square Metro Stops.
Rosslyn Key Bridge Marriott Hotel Bus Stop at approximately 8:10 a.m. The stop is directly on Route 29 (Lee Highway) at the local Metro bus stop, not directly in front of the hotel. The club's bus will very briefly stop in the road on Route 29 to pickup hikers.
Vienna Metro NORTH parking lot,last bus shelter (Nutley St. Exit off Interstate 66 on North/Vienna side of I-66) at approximately 8:25 a.m. Note: There is a "south" parking lot also where there are also bus shelters. If this is your first time meeting at Vienna, please comesome minutes early to find the stop. If by 8:15, you are not with a large group of hikers who say they're Capital Hiking Club, you are most likely at the south bus stop. Without delay, cross into, through, and back out to the NORTH parking lot where you will see the CHC hikers.
Reservations: The Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited to join on all trips. Early reservations are appreciated! While reservations are accepted Friday, making your reservation prior to Thursday evening helps to ensure your seat on the bus, and prevents the cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups.
If contacting hike leaders during the week of the hike, please place calls prior to 9:30 p.m. As a courtesy to other hikers and to the hike leaders, please cancel as early as possible, so that your reserved spot may be given to someone else.
Cost, what to wear, what to bring: Transportation costs are listed for each hike. Bring sufficient food and water for a day's outing in a day pack or fanny pack with individual First Aid articles, a whistle, and extra clothing according to the season. Sturdy boots or shoes are a necessity. It is recommended to carry 8 oz. of water per mile to be hiked. Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drinks are also recommended.
Liability: By RSVPing for a CHC hike, you are acknowledging and accepting that hikers are responsible for their own safety and must assume risks and liability for all outings. CHC leaders, officers, and representatives shall not be liable for any injuries, loss or damage to persons or property, direct or consequential, arising out of any trips or Club activities. Participants will be asked to sign a waiver the day of the hike. Hikers are expected to be able to keep a 2 mph pace.
(Optional) Membership Dues $10.00 per year. Click the "Member dues"link (on the left side of this page)to pay the $10 annual dues to support the Capital Hiking Club. Dues help pay for the administrative and web costs of running the club, and you will also benefit from a reduced rate for club hikes.
If the hike is listed as full and your 6 month free trial of the Capital Hiking Club membership has expired, Meetup may prompt you to pay the membership dues. If you choose to pay the membership, you are still not guaranteed a spot on the hike: you can only get a spot on the hike if one opens up. Dues are non-refundable.
If you choose not to pay the membership dues and are not a member, please change the amount due from $25 to $28 when making payment.
