THIS IS A STRENUOUS, ADVANCED LEVEL HIKE. THIS HIKE IS NOT FOR BEGINNERS. THERE WILL BE NO "PLUS ONES" ALLOWED ON THIS HIKE. IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO ATTEND THIS HIKE, PLEASE HAVE THAT PERSON SIGN UP SO THAT THEY CAN READ THE HIKE DESCRIPTION AND ACKNOWLEDGE THE WAIVER OF LIABILITY.

HIKE STATS

Time: Arrive 6:30 AM, set up car shuttle, leave by 7:00 AM
Level: Advanced (strenuous)
Miles: 12.7 miles round trip
Gain: approximately 5040'

Peaks: Timber (8303'), Telegraph (8985'), Thunder (8587')

Time: approximately 6 hours

DESCRIPTION
This is classic roller coaster hike and good training for more strenuous summits. Because we begin at Icehouse Canyon, and Cucamonga Wilderness only permits groups of up to 12, I am capping the hike at 12, but will open another group if we have enough RSVPs and a second leader.

The hike begins at the trail head to Icehouse Canyon (due east of Baldy Village). From the trail head, we follow a well-marked path through the rocky canyon bottom for about 2 miles, at which point the elevation gain becomes continuous until reaching Icehouse Saddle (about 3.5 miles into the hike). At the saddle, we take a quick snack, regroup and the roller coaster begins! We'll bag Timber first, followed by Telegraph and Thunder. Expect short breaks on each peak (5-10 mins). We finish at the Baldy Notch, where everyone is invited to enjoy a hearty lunch and beer (!!). Following lunch, you have the option of descending to Manker Flats via the ski lift, but please keep in mind this hike anticipates taking the fire road back to Manker Flats (for the full 12 miles). If you plan to take the ski lift, please be prepared to wait for others for the purpose of the car shuttle.

PARKING

We shall meet at the Manker Flats parking area (the trail head to the Ski Hut trail) at 6:30 AM, assign drivers and shuttle down to the Icehouse Canyon parking lot. Because parking at the Icehouse Canyon trail head is limited, please be on time so that we can sort cars at Manker Flats and still find parking at Icehouse. A CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE PASS IS REQUIRED at both lots. Restrooms are available at the trail head to Icehouse. We begin the hike promptly at 7 AM.

WHAT TO BRING
10 essentials; sturdy hiking shoes or trail runners; 3-4 liters of water, electrolytes, salt tablets or similar salt supplement, snacks for the trail; hat and sunscreen; money for lunch at the Notch.

DIRECTIONS
From all directions, take the 210 to the Baseline exit. Take Baseline west for half a block, turning right onto Padua Ave. Head north and turn right on Mt. Baldy Rd, following for about 10 miles to the Baldy Village. Follow Mt. Baldy Rd for another four miles. At this point, Baldy Road will turn abruptly left and begin ascending steeply (there is a modern condominium complex at the corner). DO NOT TURN LEFT. Instead continue straight approximately 100 yards to the Icehouse Canyon trail head.
