One of the classic Southern California hikes is the 3T's trail that begins at the Icehouse Canyon trailhead and ends at the Baldy notch. But completing that hike requires the hassle of a car shuttle. Who needs that??? Plus, the third T of the hike sucks. Thunder Mountains is a nothing peak at the top of a ski run and the hike from there to the notch is an ugly rocky fire road.

So, for our next "Whitney training hike" we will be doing the 2T's because 2 is better than 3. We will start and finish our hike at the Icehouse Canyon trailhead. Icehouse Canyon is a steep, but beautiful, trail that parallels a year-round stream for the first couple of miles. After we reach the Icehouse Saddle, we will head up the 3T's trail to Timber mountain and then Telegraph Peak. From there, we will return the way we came back to the Icehouse trailhead. The total roundtrip mileage should be about 14 miles. For any tigers, you can add an additional 1.8 miles by taking the Chapman Trail on the way up or down. At this point in the season, I think that I will be fine with the 14 miles. :-)

Whether you are going with me to Whitney this year or not, you are welcome to join us on what should be a great hike. I'm hoping the ladybug swarm will still be happening as we descend Icehouse Canyon.

You can alsochoose shorter options. If you want to return after reaching Icehouse Saddle, the roundtrip will be 7.2 miles. If you choose to turn around at Timber Mountain, the total trip distance will be 9 miles.

Please join us this Saturday as we take the ugly out of the 3T's.

2T's are better than 3!

See you on the trail. Be well and thrive!

Dennis
