Organizer: AJ

Location: Chantry Flats Trail head **Adventure Pass Require**

Hike difficulty: Level 6

Distance: 10 miles

Elevation Gain: 2100'

Time: 5.5 hours

Trail condition: Starts with a fire road, after that mainly single file trail with more than 80% shade. Some creak crossing as we get to the water fall and to the Sturtevant Camp, so where decent shoes. The Trials are well marked.

Water: You must carry a minimum of 2-3liters.

Dog: yes, well behaved dogs on leash "Mooney The Heeler" will be there!!

Toilette: At the trail head and about 1/2 through.

Liability Wavier: Required. This is the link.

Weather Forecast: Hermit and Sturtevant Falls Hike Weather.

What to Bring and Wear: Please review US Hiking Day Hike Equipment List for what you should bring and wear. Wear appropriate footwear as there will be some small rock / stream hopping. Please bring some bug repellent or net, there could be flies on the way.

Direction: .From the Foothill Freeway (I-210) take the Santa Anita Avenue exit and head north. Pass through the residential neighborhood to the foot of the mountains, continue another 3 miles where Santa Anita will dead end into the Chantry Flats parking lot.

Parking: THIS IS THE BIG CHALLENGEFOR THIS HIKE. We need to reach the Trail head by 6:30 to get parking(I am not able to set the time as 6:30 in the schedule).Adventure Pass is required, either Daily or Monthly passes can be picked up at any REI or Big 5. Passes can be purchased at the Ranger Station if they are available. Parking at Chantry Flat can be difficult at times. It would be good to do Car Pooling. There is a REI a few blocks Plenty of parking, if parking is full, extra parking is off to the side near the beginning of parking lot, look for access road.

Note : I will update the Carpool sheet later.

Venue Overview:

Big Santa Anita Canyon is one of the most beautiful wooded glens in the San Gabriel Mountains. Its thick riparian forest, gurgling streams, and abundant shade, offers a sylvan sanctuary fornature-lovers, campers, and hikers alike. A short distance from Chantry Flat, the silver spray of Sturtevant Falls plunges fifty feet into a shallow, rock-ribbed pool, shaded by alders and oaks.

Again, the National Forest Adventure Pass is required for parking at Chantry Flat. Meet 6:30 AM at the trail head, we will leave at 6:45 am. From the trail head we will head down into the valley and we will head towards Sturtevant Falls, after a short break head back to the junction and take the Gabrielino Trial to theSturtevant Camp. This is almost 3 miles. This is a private Camp, so need to be respectful to the guests. Then Follow the Upper Zion Trail, and will head to the Zion Summit. We need to do a Wood Crossing once we start to Upper Zion Trial. Then will hike towards Hoegees Trail Camp. We will pass some nice Cottages on the way. Then takeUpper Winter Creek Trail, for 4 Miles, to reach the Parking.

Almost 80% of the Trail will be shaded and it feels like a good long walk. The Trees and amazing and it will not be much crowded in the trails. Most of the people come there for the water fall. Dont think there will be a waterfall once we go, however the trial is a must see one.
