This is one of the most-interesting backroads walks in Amador County, and fairly ambitious at 7 1/2 miles and 1,300 feet of gain. It features bottomland along Rancheria Creek, deep forests, and a ridge walk with excellent views along Meath Road. Note that some of the road surface is gravel/dirt, but over half the distance is on pavement, mostly just one lane. Well figure on a munch stop up on the ridge at about the 5 mile mark. The starting point at Shake Ridge Rd is about an 8 minute drive above the town of Sutter Creek. The first mile of the hike is out-and-back and the remainder of the hike is a loop. Carpools are encouraged. This is a moderate-pace hike with some lengthy and steep ups-and-downs; not in the leisurely category. From downtown Sutter Creek the road is called Gopher Flat, and at two miles and the stop sign, you take the left onto Shake Ridge Rd. Another three miles, and Quartz Mountain Road comes in on the left. That is where we will gather. (Note that there is no road sign denoting Quartz Mountain Road, but I'll be there.)

If anyone would like, we can swing by a wine tasting room afterwards in Sutter Creek.
