PLEASE READ THESE IMPORTANT DETAILS!

This is a favorite hike of mine and one of the most beautiful and scenic hikes in all of the bay area. It is an intermediate/difficult hike and is NOT a hike for beginners! There are some significant steep inclines and descents. Rain or significant wet weather will cancel this hike!

Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on trails in Mt. Diablo State Park. It's tarantula season so maybe we will get lucky and find some of those furry friends!

Meet at the overlook/parking area at the entrance to the Juniper Campground near the summit. Please arrive by 9:00 so we can be ready to go by 9:15. This hike takes approximately 3 1/2 - 4 hours.

This is an approximately 6.5 mile hike with a 2500' elevation gain. Much of the hike is on wide rocky fire roads, with the last 1.5-2 miles on a single track trail to the summit. Bring a lot of water (recommend 2 qts+) and snacks. Bring sunscreen as most of the hike is not in the shade. Also, pack a warm layer as it can be chilly and breezy at the summit. There is a museum at the summit with beverages, ice cream, souvenirs etc. so bring money if you want to treat yourself.

- Juniper Campground Site #23 Look for wooden fence marker for DEER FLAT ROAD

- DEER FLAT ROAD for 0.75mi

- Right onto MERIDIAN RIDGE

- MERIDIAN RIDGE for 1mi

- MERIDIAN RIDGE comes to a junction with 2 trails

- Pick the one on the far right, narrow path, steep uphill = BALD RIDGE TRAILfor 1.5mi to PROSPECTOR'S GAP

- Right onto NORTH PEAK TRAIL toward summit for 1mi

- Right towards SUMMIT TRAIL TO LOWER SUMMIT PARKING LOT

- SUMMIT!

- Walk down to the far end of the LOWER parking lot (past the rest rooms) and descend JUNIPER TRAIL

- Left to stay on JUNIPER TRAIL at trail marker

- JUNIPER TRAIL for 1mi to get back to parking lot

There is a $10 fee to enter the park. Allow 30 minutes from the entrance gate to the parking area! There are always a lot of bikers on the summit road - do not attempt to pass them on blind curves. I suggest a carpool up the mountain, a good meeting place would be the Starbucks at the new shopping center at Oak Grove and Ygnacio Valley Blvd in Walnut Creek.
