Let's go on an intermediate levelhike through Monrovia Canyon on the Ben Overturff Trail. This hike is moderately challenging but won't lay you up for the rest of the day. The hike loops through the canyon past the Sawpit Dam (decommissioned) and up to the ruins of the old DeerPark Lodge.

The trail is scenic, partially shaded, and there are several creeks in the area. The trail on the way in continues steadily uphill until we reach the lodge, so be forewarned.

The hiking area is controlled and maintained by the City of Monrovia and was reclaimed more than 20 years ago. (Reclaimed from who I do not know.) Ihave it on good authority, however, that the roving clans of black bears in the area are not too keen on the City's stewardship and have attempted (unsuccessfully so far) to gain a seat on the Monrovia City Council to make their voices/growls of disapproval heard.

Besides the California black bear, the canyon is home to the gray fox, pipistrelle bat, and deer. Bear, fox, and bat sightings are rare, but deer are almost always present and visible.

Ben Overturff was a Monrovia pioneer and contractor by trade who settled with his wife in the area in 1905 or thereabouts, on the plateau in the area of the old lodge.

Hey, racing fans--Victor Espinoza, the renowned jockey who rode California Chrometo victories in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness in 2015 and took the Triple Crown with American Pharoah in 2016, calls Monrovia home. (Just another reason for you LA Hiking celebrity stalkers to make your way over here.)

See you on the trail!
