Algonquin is the tallest peak along the MacIntyre Mountain Range in the Adirondacks and the second highest in New York State. While the climb to the summit is only just over seven kms, much of the route is steep and becomes progressively steeper as one approaches the summit. A bald summit with spectacular views is one's reward for the effort. Algonquin also is home of several species of rare and endangered alpine vegetation; we will be obliged to tread lightly and stay on bare rock. Algonquin is blessed with a 360 degree view from its bald summit with amazing views, in particular the face of Mount Colden.

This Adirondack 46 High Peak is number 2 on the list.

But that's not all as we will extend our hike to Iroquois Peak after our lunch and sightseeing break at the top of Algonquin.Iroquois Peak is 8th highest peak in the Adirondack Mountains.Iroquois is also blessed with a 360 degree view from its bald summit with amazing views, as you can imagine, with the best views of Wallface.

On the way back to our cars, we can add a short side trip to Wright Peak; this is optional and depends on the time already spent hiking and our fatigue levels.

Ascent: Total elevation gain is around1,400 m (plus Wright), making this a moderately difficult hike. If you have not recently hiked more than 14 km, this hike is not for you.

Distance is about 16 km which will take us about 8 hours to finish including lunch. If we can manage a faster pace, then Wright Peak will be a great dessert, while still completing the entire hike in 8 hours, leaving us plenty of time to swim in Heart Lake (if it is still sunny). Bring dry clothes and a towel. (Heart lake is private -- if we cannot easily swim there, we will find an alternative.)

Below is the route from Montreal to the trailhead where we will park the cars and start the hike. There is a US$10 parking fee per car, the driver will pay the fee as he/she is getting cash contributions from the riders.

Route to trailhead: Click here

Please print this trail map -- our planned route will be explained at the trailhead.

Plan to join us for dinner in Plattsburgh after our hike (and swim)!

The pink route will be ours.
