The Lakes Region Conservation Trust (LRCT) / Castle in the Clouds area contains 28 miles of hiking trails along with several mountains in the 5,381 acre area.

The Castle in the Clouds Conservation Area Hiker Achievement Patch Program is an LRCT project designed to recognize hikers who have ascended 5 major summits and hiked 16 designated trails, totaling 28 miles, located entirely within LRCTs Castle in the Clouds Conservation Area. There is no time limit for earning the patch. You can hike, snowshoe, or cross-country ski the trails in any season. Some of these trails have the most breath-taking waterfalls in the state of New Hampshire, including Falls of Songand Bridle Veil Falls.

As with all group hikes- we start as a group and stay together. The leaders have the final say re: route and whether we summit based on safety considerations. The group hikes at the pace of the slowest hiker.

There is a mandatory gear list- read it!

Be prepared for winter conditions!

MANDATORY GEAR: You must have EVERY ITEM on this list!

Ten essentials plus 4 You will see this on every one of my hikes. So get your gear together and check it twice!

1&2. Map/compass

3. Working headlamp (a second headlamp or extra batteries)

4. High Energy Snacks and Lunch You will be burning calories moving and keeping warm. Bring more than you think you will need. No Hangry hikers allowed!

5. 2 liters of water minimum At least one of your Nalgenes should start out with hot water and be packed inside your pack to keep it from freezing. I strongly encourage you to bring a hot beverage in an insulated thermos as well.

6. Clothing: NO COTTON (cotton kills). Synthetic wicking base layer, mid layer, insulating outer layer and windproof/waterproof layers for top and bottom. Extra socks, 2 pairs of wind/waterproof gloves or mittens and a warm winter hat. Insulated winter hiking boots. Face protection (balaclava) and goggles/eye protection.

7 Personal first aid kit and meds: The group may be asked to carry some group safety equipment

8. Eye protection sunglasses (or goggles in winter/wind)

9. Pocket knife and tools

10 & 11. HEAT hand warmers (Water proof matches/ fire starter)

12. Whistle

13. Trekking poles with snow baskets

14. Traction devices and snowshoes

Also a large backpack in which to carry everything. Lining it with a kitchen trash bag will keep everything dry.

Mandatory Skills:

Learn how to don and adjust your snow shoes and traction devices before Saturday morning!

Organize your pack and be able to locate everything quickly. Practice and become proficient with donning and stowing your gear. (Rummaging around for gear and struggling with zippers and straps won't earn you any points from your group members while they are waiting for you).

You should be in sufficient physical condition to maintain a moderate pace uphill for 5 miles.

Please check out the "pages" tab at the top of this page- there is a ton of useful information gathered by many experienced hikers.
