Felila, in the Redwood Classroom at Mark West Community Preschool, has been struggling with health issues for a number of months. She has taken medical leave to find time and space to heal. We as an organization have made the commitment to maintain all health insurance and benefits for an employee facing a situation of this nature at no cost to them for the duration of their leave as well as flexibility and understanding with them returning to work on the schedule that meets their health needs. This however is not enough to support a teacher finically. We realize that this work requires 110% of our teachers time and energy. The work of an early childhood educator demands physical, mental and emotional presence at all times. We are so grateful to those who commit themselves to this field caring for our dear children. In return we would like to ensure that our teachers do not face financial hardships should a challenge like this arise in their life. This situation has made us come to terms with the fact that all of our teachers are one health issue away from catastrophic financial devastation. In an effort to support teachers through tough times we would like to create a fund, which they can access through grants. This program will fall under our non-profit The Constructive Learning Project whose mission is to support early childhood educators in Sonoma County. This idea is in its infancy and we will continue to grow and build on it. In the meantime we are hosting our first fundraiser in Felilas name.
