About This Hike:

The Lehigh Switchback Rail-Trail is a rail trail (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rail_trail) in Jim Thorpe, PA (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Thorpe,_PA).[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switchback_Railroad_Trail#cite_note-1)

The trail surface is natural, consisting of dirt, roots, rocks, and occasional coal chunks. The trail runs downhill on the former right-of-way of the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauch_Chunk_Switchback_Railway) from Summit Hill (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summit_Hill) to Jim Thorpe. Located midway on the trail is Mauch Chunk Lake Park (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mauch_Chunk_Lake_Park&action=edit&redlink=1) which provides parking for hikers.

The Switchback Trail consists of two nine-mile routes that intersect. With its hard-packed dirt surface, this track will take us from Mauch Chunk Lake, through forests, peaceful wooded trails to a steep climbs and hiking on a bluff overlooking the community of Jim Thorpe below. As this section of the trail winds down just outside of Jim Thorpe well take an optional small loop that will take us to a scenic overview. At the trails end, we will encounter a moderately difficult descent on a steep, slippery rock surface where keeping footing can be a challenge.
