It's back and Boppier than ever! The second-annual Gunks Boulder Bop promises exactly the same amount of Gunks and Boulders, with slightly more Bop!

What

The Gunks Boulder Bop is theonlyoutdoor bouldering competition in the Gunks! It's an all-ages, all-abilities romp through the boulder field.

We will meet at 9:00 am in the open field near the parking lot to register climbers and go over rules. Competitors will have from then until 4:00pm to climb as much as they want, with their top five boulders comprising their final score. All boulders will be assigned a point value instead of a V-grade, so even if you've climbed at Peter's Kill before, you might be surprised what gets you points! All attempts must be counted and all climbs must be signed off by two witnesses. All scorecards must be turned in by 4:00 pm on the dot.

After the bouldering is done, everyone is going to head into town for the prize ceremony and after party atBC's Climbing Gym, complete with free climbing, burritos, treats, and shenanigans.

Where

The Peter's Kill section of Minnewaska State Park. Peter's Kill is the only area of Minnewaska where climbing is allowed, and while access is normally capped to a certain number of daily climbers, the rangers at Peter's Kill have gone above and beyond to help make this competition happen!

When

Saturday November 9thwith a rain date of Sunday November 10th. A rain date call will be made no later than Wednesday 11/6.

Why

Because bouldering with friends is better than bouldering alone, and every competitior gets asuper sweet customized event beanie, GunksApps Peterskill Bouldering guide, customized Organic Climbing ditty bag, swag bag, burrito,in addition to whatever prizes you might win.

What Else

We've capped the number of climbers at 85, and while we might have a certain number of spots available day-of, we can't make any promises. So sign up now and guarantee yourself a spot!

New this year! We've added a SPECTATOR ticket option, for all who wish to attend for moral support/spotting/coaching but don't wish to climb or compete. The cost of the spectator ticket (less fees) is going directly to Peter's Kill. If you want a burrito at the after party, please buy the SPECTATOR + BURRITO ticket option. Please email emma@rockandsnow.com if you have any questions about the Spectator ticket option.

Finally:everyone in the boulder field must have a signed waiver. Before you buy your tickets, please sign the waiverhere. Everyone means every competitor, every spectator, every volunteer, every parent, every coach. Non-climbers and climbers alike must have signed waivers. We will be doggedly tenacious in making sure everyone has a waiver, but please don't make us track you down.

Sound good? Let's bop!

FAQs

What do I need to bring?

Bring your climbing shoes, chalkbag, a crash pad, snacks and water, whatever clothing you need to regulate your temperature appropriately, and whatever tape/brushes/liquid chalk/ritual objects you need to boulder at maximum power.

Leashed dogs are permitted at Peter's Kill but please be aware that an outdoor bouldering competition can be an overwhelming place for a dog, and particularly talkative or anxious pups might not enjoy the chaotic scene.

Please no beer, glass bottles, cigarettes, speakers, etc. Be cool ok?

And regardless of what you bring: bring a small bag to pack out trash! Not only does Minnewaska not have garbage bins available, good samaritans will be noticed and rewarded.

How old do I have to be to compete?

There is no minimum age for competitors, but there won't be official chaperones or spotters provided.

Can my parent come with me?

Yes! Non-climbing parents and coaches are encouraged to attend, and everyone in the boulder field must have a signed waiver. To keep crowding to a minimum we ask that parents and coaches keep a low ratio of adult to child, and not bring children who will not be competing. We also ask that coaches purchase a SPECTATOR ticket.

What if I get lost? Are the boulders marked?

GunksAppswill be providing a lifetime license to the Peter's Kill Bouldering App for all participants! There will also be a team of volunteers roving around ready to help out.

I've never climbed outside before, can I compete?

Yes! We're going to make sure that there are fun climbs for people of all abilities!

What are the categories, and can I pick one for myself?

We're going to do the best we can to reward the highest number of people for doing their best. We're also not sure how the registration is going to break down as far as gender, age, and ability, so we don't want to lay out the categories before we see who is competing. You can pick a category for yourself by climbing as hard as you can.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Peter's Kill has limited parking. Please try to carpool and lessen your parking impact as much as possible. Those who carpool will receive a special prize/perk/benefit that we're still trying to work out.We define 'carpooling' as coming in a vehicle with3 or more people. Let whoever is checking you in know that you carpooled to be entered for your perk.

Can I volunteer to help out?

Yes! Email us at emma@rockandsnow.com.
