Hydrography

The Illinois River is formed by the confluence of theKankakeeandDes Plainesrivers in easternGrundy County, nearJoliet. It flows west across northeastern Illinois, passingMorrisandOttawa, where it is joined by theMazon RiverandFox River. AtLaSalle, it is joined by theVermilion River, then flows west pastPeru, andSpring Valley. In southeasternBureau Countyit turns south at an area known as the "Great Bend," flowing southwest across western Illinois, pastLaconand downtownPeoria, the chief city on the river.

Geology

South ofHennepin, the Illinois River is following the ancient channel of theMississippi River. TheIllinoian Stage, about 300,000 to 132,000 years ago, blocked the Mississippi nearRock Island, diverting it into its present channel. After the glacier melted, the Illinois River flowed into the ancient channel. TheHennepin Canalroughly follows the ancient channel of the Mississippi upstream of Rock Island.

The modern channel of the Illinois River was shaped in a matter of days by theKankakee Torrent. During the melting of theWisconsin Glacierabout 10,000 years ago, a lake formed in present-day Indiana, comparable to one of the modernGreat Lakes. The lake formed behind the terminal moraine of a substage of that glacier. Melting ice to the north eventually raised the level of the lake so that it overtopped the moraine. The dam burst, and the entire volume of the lake was released in a very short time, perhaps a few days.

TheMazon Riveror "Mazon Creek", is atributaryof theIllinois Riverin the United States, theconfluenceis nearMorris, Illinois.

The Mazon River is associated with theMazon Creek fossilsof the Francis Creek Shale, which are also exposed in strip mines and quarries near the River. This fossil bed includes well-preserved fossils from thePennsylvanianperiod of thePaleozoicera and is a world-famousLagerstttensite.

The Mazon River is approximately 30 miles in length, with the West Fork considered the main branch.

We had the perfect weather for our kayak tour down the Illinois River! We had such a good day is turned out to be a longer trip, which was fine with us! Thanks Janee ! I cant wait to do the Mazon River next time! We will be back!! Thanks for your patience with all of us!!

A perfect Beginner's Kayak..

Review by Newbie on

Kayak Morris was the perfect pick! It gave us a personalized tour in a peaceful and boat-free section of the Mazon river, a chance to ride the waves of the boats on the Illinois River and a chance to visit the lake offset of the river. Our tour guide was patient and helpful. 2 hours was the perfect amount of time for a new kayaker and a great price compared to city rates of Chicago. Would feel confident after a short time with the guide to rent a kayak on my own through Kayak Morris.

What a Day!..

I took my brother out for his birthday. What a gift! Many areas to explore or just relax. We can't wait to do it again. The staff was friendly and the kayaks were great. Thanks for an awesome time!

great experience..

Review by family day

The day was just great! It was a fun trip and worth the drive & expense. Only thing, as a beginner I wish I had known some basic information like to bring a water bottle & sun screen. But it was still a blast and we'll be going again next year.
