Gold Strike Hot Springs is a popular hike in the Las Vegas area and a favorite for many. The trail-head is located a half-mile from the Hoover Dam Lodge near Boulder City-- just before the actual Hoover Dam itself. Hikes in this area are typically done between mid-October and mid-May.

Our adventure begins in a wash-- eventually meandering through a picturesque slot canyon surrounded by towering rock walls. We'll pass several hot springs and hot waterfalls along our route. Our final destination will be the sparkling blue-green waters of the Colorado River. Plan on enjoying a relaxing and well-deserved lunch on the banks of the Colorado before returning to our starting point.

Hiking distance is about 4 miles each way and requires maneuvering over, around and between several massive boulders. It's somewhat like an obstacle course but that's what makes this hike fun. It should take about 6 hours round trip depending upon time spent in the hot springs and at the river. Beginners may find some of the rocks and boulders we'll encounter to be intimidating but a moderate, systematic pace will help ensure that everyone gets through safely. Ropes are attached in some of the more challenging spots as an added measure of safety. Nonetheless, due to an abundance of slippery rocks, serious injury (including head injury) is always a possibility. Feel free to wear a mountaineering helmet if desired.

Since we're hiking in a protected canyon wind should not be an issue for us. Bring a minimum of 3 liters of water per person plus a hat, sunscreen, lunch and snacks. Gloves may be helpful to avoid rope burn but are not required. Waterproof shoes (which grip well on wet rocks) are also recommended. Quick-drying clothing is essential as you're guaranteed to get wet. Remember to pack a small backpacking towel to dry off afterward. Expect to burn LOTS of calories and to use all of your major muscle groups on this hike-- especially on the way back which is almost entirely uphill. Therefore, an above-average fitness level is recommended.

We'll depart from the parking lot of Fiesta Henderson at 8am sharp-- therefore, try to arrive by 7:45am (form carpools). We will caravan to the trail-head, which is the exit right after the Hoover Dam Lodge. Click on the map link for the Hoover Dam Lodge (at the top of this event posting) to view the location of the Hoover Dam Lodge and the trail-head parking lot.

You'll find this to be a fun, beautiful and memorable hike-- and a great workout as well! Be sure to bring a camera to capture the amazing sights. An extra pair of dry socks and shoes for the drive home after the hike is highly recommended.
