Goat Canyon Trestle, Mortero Palms, & Jacumba Peak (4,512') Loop Hike - we'll start our cross-country (no trails) desert hike at Mortero Palms out I-8 east near Ocotillo, CA. We'll hike out to & then scramble our way down into Goat Canyon to the famous Goat Canyon Railway Trestle. We'll walk through several of the railroad tunnels, check out a couple of old passenger cars on the tracks, & later climb up to bag the high point in the area Jacumba Peak (4,512') and enjoy it's great 360 degree views before descending into a canyon with several small dry waterfalls for our after dark return back to Mortero Palms finishing in the palm grove under a big beautiful rising full moon (see some pics below of this hike).

Details: this hike is approx. 14.25 cross-country miles / with approx. 5,700' elevation gain as an estimate & involves some scrambling. Hiking time: approx. 7:45 AM - 8:15 PM. Optional dinner stop afterwards in Alpine on the return home if time allows.

Bring: 4 quarts or liters of H2O with electrolytes (more if you're normally a heavy drinker/drink more than others), snacks to eat WHILE MOVING, lunch for the trestle & peak, plenty of layers (outer jacket or shell, fleece or down jacket, beanie, gloves, etc), hat / sunglasses / sunscreen, headlamp or light with fresh batteries for our after dark finish (2.5 - 3 hrs or so ?), first aid, poles, gaiters, plastic comb & pointy tweezers for getting any cactus out, etc. Pre-hydrate by drinking in the AM & on the drive out.

My hiking style: we'll stay together as a group for both camaraderie & safety; we snack & drink while moving except for short bathroom breaks or pictures as necessary; I'll take a 20 min. break near the Trestle & again just before dark at the peak to eat "real" food / sign registers / enjoy the view; I prefer to hike at a bit faster than average pace.

Weather Links (note: only desert rain cancels, not in town rain, as this sheltered area rarely gets rain even when town & mountains do):
