What we'll do
The French Broad River overnighter with the ETAG meetup!! PLEASE read the entire description and ask ANY questions you have beforehand about the trip. I'm here to help! There is a limit of attendees, so please only RSVP if you're pretty sure you want to, and can, attend. Please update your RSVP if you can no longer attend. This river is free-flowing, but always has water to paddle (large drainage basin). This should be a great trip!!!

The French Broad River from the small Appalachian Trail town of Hot Springs, North Carolina (pop. 600), to the historic town of Newport, Tennessee, is full of beautiful scenery, forested mountains, round river rocks and gravel, cool railroad trestles, sandbars, warm water, class I pools and class II-II+ rapids and shoals. There are a few very easy class III rapids that some of us will run, but you can skip them (portage) without much trouble. You will not be forced to run any of the class III rapids. There's no shame in walking around. We will all scout and make a decision at the river beforehand. We'll meet at the Strawberry Plains Cracker Barrel (exit 398 off I-40) at 7:00am that Saturday to carpool/caravan to the river. Please meet us there and park in the outer area of the lot with the other kayaks/canoes. Be sure to ask if they're with the ETAG meetup as lots of other groups meet here and you don't want to head to another river without knowing it. From Cracker Barrel, we'll head to the takeout upstream of Newport, TN. We will leave a few vehicles there (public parking area) and then shuttle everyone and all the gear up to the put-in / launch site in the quaint town of Hot Springs, NC. We'll leave the vehicles there and head downriver to our campsite for the night--about halfway down the river or so. We can restock supplies in Hot Springs before we launch as they have flush toilets and an outfitter's store with all the gear you could need. After we arrive at our campsite in the Cherokee National Forest in far east TN, we'll set up camp and get cooking dinner and build a small campfire (if applicable weather permits--no drought). We'll stay the night there and then around mid-morning, we'll pack up and move downriver to the "bigger" rapids/shoals and then on to the takeout to unload and shuttle back to get all the vehicles and gear back to everyone and then head to Cracker Barrel to get the remaining vehicles back to their proper owners. You will need to bring quite a few different things for this trip. Please ask me and see the "what to bring" section of this description. Backpacking supplies (tent, pad, stove, food, water to drink, etc.), paddling supplies (boat, PFD, paddle, heavy duty dry bags, class II skills, etc.), food water, good first aid kit, any meds you might need?, good physical condition, good swimming ability, a positive attitude and a teamwork mentality is required to have a safe and successful trip. There will be other overnighter trips soon if you can't make this.

What to bring
A kayak or canoe (no rentals available at the river), a paddle, PFD/lifejacket (USCG type III or V), a whitewater helmet (not required, but recommended), proper river shoes and attire, change of clothes/towel, large river-proof drybag(s), sunscreen, any meds you might need?, LOTS OF WATER TO DRINK, plenty of food and snacks to eat/share, backpacking supplies (travel lite!), small tent, pad, toiletries/small shovel (for cat holes), backpacking stove, raincoat, first aid kit?, a good cooler?, etc.

Important to know
By signing up, and/or attending, you agree that this is risky/dangerous activity and you agree to hold no one liable for an accident if it were to occur. Thanks

**THIS IS AN OVERNIGHT TRIP. We will be camping one night at around the halfway point by the river in a primitive camping area in the Cherokee National Forest. Roughly a 30 mile trip. Please ask any questions beforehand. NO PETS!! We will go rain or shine, although if it's really bad weather predicted, then we will change plans.

How to find us:Meet us at the Cracker Barrel at exit 398 (Strawberry Plains) at 7:00am to carpool/caravan to the river. Park away from the building just behind the Weigels. Look for the kayaks/canoes.
