Day One: Daily 5 and Math Daily 3 Frameworks:Create Classroom Routines That Propel Each Student Forward

Step-by-step training on how to launch and sustain the Daily 5 and Math Daily 3

The two-phase method for launching each task (Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work, Work on Writing, Math by Myself, Math with Someone, Math Writing)
Foundation Lessons to effectively launch Daily 5
Creating a supportive classroom environment in seven stages
Holding students (and yourself) accountable to individualized plans


New insights on keeping students engaged and moving forward

View the 10 Steps to Independence in action.
Brain-break ideas from The 2 Sisters and colleagues
Stamina-building strategies and supports, even for those students with a brief attention span
The researched basis for why this framework helps every student experience success


Through collaboration, modeling, and reflection, participants leave this workshop with the ability to create independent learners using the Daily 5/Math Daily 3 structure.

Day Two: CAFE: From Assessment to Instruction:Get Ready, Assess, Teach: Reach Every Student

Step-by-step training on how to deliver differentiated reading instruction within the Daily 5 classroom, where students work and learn independently. How to use the Literacy CAFE System to accelerate student progress in Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary (CAFE). The day will include:

Transforming lengthy whole-group lessons into brain-compatible focus lessons that target students individual needs as readers
Methods and resources for assessing students on a routine basis
Components of a literacy block, including focus lessons, small-group lessons, and individual conferences
Building accountability into individual and group interactions


New insights on matching students with strategies that develop strong readers:

Creating the classroom CAFE Menu board your students post on all year as they learn new strategies
Protocol for goal-directed one-on-one conferences
How to organize and manage whole-group instruction
Enlisting families to reinforce learning strategies at home


This workshop includes models for how and how not to implement CAFE in your classroom.
