An alum of the University of Chicago Law School, Patrice J. Thys has enjoyed a distinguished international career at the intersection of law and business. He has led European and Asian multinational corporations for more than 20 years, after beginning his career as an attorney in Washington DC and Paris. He will discuss China as a business place, the evolution of the Chinese startup scene, and how foreign companies can be successful in China. He will also tell the story of a failed wearable startup, iBeezi, and the role of team relationships in startup success.


Joining Patrice in conversation will be Alexis Van Gestel, a Senior Consultant with leading European management consulting firm Roland Berger.




About the speakers:

A graduate of the University of Chicago Law School as well as the Universit catholique de Louvain in Belgium, Patrice Thys has 30 years of management experience at several multinational corporations. He is currently Founder and Managing Director of Asia-Euro Consultancy Ltd., a Hong Kong based consulting firm. He is also Senior Advisor at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, an organization headquartered in Germany.

Previously, he held several executive roles at AB-InBev, the world's largest beer company. In 1995, he began InBevs Asia-Pacific operations from scratch and grew it to a 1.5 euro billion business with 18,000 employees and 31 production sites by 2005. He was the President of the Asia-Pacific region and member of the Executive Board, as well as principal internal coordinator of the 3.5 billion euro IPO launched in December 2000 at Euronext-Brussels.

Patrice began his career at the Washington DC law firm Seyfarth Shaw in government procurement, and spent seven years at Paris-based Vivendi and Alsthom in negotiations and contracts for energy and utility companies around the world.


Alexis Van Gestel is a Senior Consultant with leading European management consulting firm Roland Berger. He began his career as a consultant for leading Belgian financial firms, and spent two years at Asia-Euro Consultancy Ltd. helping European companies expand into Chinese markets.
