What we'll do
Our next field trip is coming up. Attached are some pictures of material I collected on my first field trip to the area in 2015 and some cabochons I made from my first and second trip there. Luckily the green common opal and orange, pink and purple agate are right off a dirt road behind the Burger King, 6158 E State Hwy 58 Boron, CA 93516 (the address says Boron, but it is Kramer Junction). Some material is on the surface, but you may have to dig for the nicer material. A regular car should have no problem with the road. I will try and dig up samples from my trips to Kramer Junction and Castle Butte. We will meet up at our usual meeting place, the Starbucks at 2986 Jamacha Rd El Cajon, CA 92019 and depart at 8:00 AM. If we leave San Diego at 8:00 that puts us at the Burger King between 11:00 11:30. There is also a Subway sandwich shop right there. Some folks from the Lake Elsinore rock club will hopefully be joining us and the Burger King has a nice large parking lot to meet up, plus we can get a hot lunch and a bathroom break. There are a couple different spots at this site that give different material so we may spend the afternoon here or some folks have told me of other collecting areas nearby for jaspers and fossilized reeds. We will see how it goes. If people are excited by what they are finding we can stay here or move on. For hotels I am staying at the Super 8 in Barstow. The rooms are reasonable and they have a hot waffle machine in addition to the continental breakfast. There are many options for dinner by the outlet center. I am told there are places to camp in the Kramer Junction area, but I have no specific information. For day #2 we are heading to Castle Butte for agates and jaspers. Again regular cars are ok. The photo of cabs in my hand are the test pieces I made from the material I gathered up there last time. The brown jasper is all over the place, it will take some looking to find colorful pieces. This site is mainly surface collecting. Since people will be joining us from different locations we can meet at the Burger King in Kramer Junction again, this time at 8:30 8:45. You can bring lunch or buy it hear before we head on to Castle Butte. For those of us staying in Barstow that means leaving at 8:00. Paul What to bring
Appropriate clothing for the weather...layering is always recommended. Water, Sunscreen, food (although there is a Burger King and a few other places to pick up a drink or food) and most importantly to use the bathroom! You might want to bring a shovel and a small pick and a bucket to bring home your rocks in.
