About Manitoulin Island:Located in the middle of Lake Huron, Manitoulin Island is the largest freshwater island in the world, with an area of approximately 2,766 square kilometers. Situated as the dividing point between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, Manitoulin Island has more than 80 inland lakes. It is located about 550 kilometers north of Toronto.The island can be accessed via two routes. Either by ferry from the South in Tobermory or over a swing bridge from the North in Little Current.Manitoulin means "Spirit Island" in the Ojibwe language. The island remains a sacred place for the natives although they have had their share of troubles.The Aboriginal culture on Manitoulin Island is still strong.

At the Ojibway Cultural Foundation Museum and Healing Centre, Anishinaabe heritage is honoured and protected in carvings, baskets and drums. Stargazing at Gordon Park, a designated Dark Sky Preserve. Capture the breathtaking Bridal Falls with your camera or simply sit and admire the majesty of this natural wonder. Cross Lake Huron to Tobermory aboard the iconic Chi-Cheemaun Ferry. Ojibwe for Big Canoe, this ferry crosses the deep waters of Georgian Bay. Day 1- SAT 20 MAY, Toronto Tobermory- Manitoulin Island
7.00 AM: 1st Pick-up location: Finch subway station "on Bishop Ave., North York - BETWEEN Kenneth Ave. and Yonge St". (Please arrive 15 Min before the departure time)
7.35 AM: 2nd Pick-up location:Mississauga Carpool Lot, Hurontario & Hwy 401.
We head towards Tobermory (290 km = about 3.5 hrs).
We will have a short coffee/washroom stop on route.
11.30 PM: Arrive inthe charming fishing village of Tobermory lined with many restaurants and shops. Time for Lunch in Tobermory (at your own expense)
1.30 PM: Cruise from Tobermory to South Baymouth (Manitoulin Island) and cross the Lake Huron aboard theChi-Cheemaun Ferry
4.00 PM: Check in to our hotel , Manitoulin Hotel & Conference Centre, and have a rest.

Gordons Park(Latitude N[masked],LongitudeW[masked])is the proud home of a Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) designated Dark Sky Preserve. The designation took place in November 2008, and the official opening ceremony took place in August 2009. We are the first, and as of yet only, commercial designated Dark Sky Preserve.Our Dark Sky Preserve is anarea of the park that is completely free of light pollution and whitelight. Its purpose is to promote exceptionally dark skies and astronomy. Our Dark SkyPreserve offers exceptional dark skies showing 7.5+ magnitude starson the best nights. The Preserve is one of the darkest observing sites in the Province of Ontario with no light pollution or sky glow around the 360 degree observing horizon. Sky Quality Meter reading (Unihedron Inc.) is 21.96 magnitudes / sq.arcsec.
The Astronomy Tour includes:

Return to the hotel.... have a short rest
Later in the afternoon we end the day with an excursion to Providence Bay and enjoy its famous sandy beaches and boardwalk, and watch the Manitoulin sunset over thebeautiful Providence Bay.[masked] PM)

Day 3- MON 22 MAY, Manitoulin Island - Parry Sound - Six Mile Lake - Toronto
Breakfast at the hotel and check out @ 10.00 AM.
Drive towardsParry Sound, where we will have a 1-hour free time for lunch (at your own expense) @[masked] PM
We will have short coffee/washroom stops on route
Enjoy a 1-hour easy hike @Six Mile Lake Provincial Park@[masked] PM
The Living Edge Trail 1 km
Catch a glimpse of beaver lodges in wetland areas, walk the rocky outcrops of the Canadian Shield and keep your eyes open for the wide variety of species that live in the forest!

NOTE:The tour is considered as easy-medium activity. The hikes last approximately 1-1.5 hours. Appropriate clothing and footwear is highly recommended. Trails can be muddy at this time of year and it can also be cool out.

Follow the P Carpool signs.This is a Government of Ontario, Ministry of Transportation parking lot. Cars may be left here for up to 5 days. Parking is free.
