There are currently 3 pretty fair lava tubes that are open in the El Malpais National Monument. We will try and get into all three. This is not an event for the safety minded. This is slightly risky and will most diffently get you out of your comfort zone! You must have a helmet! A bike helmet will do just fine. Knee and elbow pads are also a very good idea! Long pants, long sleeve shirt, a good pair of gloves, and good solid boots will help. It will be cool in the tubes so be prepared. A good headlamp, and a spare light of some sort will be required. There will be some scrambling involved. Total driving distance one way is about 120 miles to the furthest tube. All on pavement except for the last 6 miles. In good weather any vehicle can make it. Other wise high clearance or 4x4 is required. Wet weather will reduce us to just one tube in the El Caldrone area. Total hiking distance around 4 miles. Bring snacks and water for a full day event. This event is open to kids and grand kids, but you must watch out for them yourself. Any one can do this event. But there will be some tight places. I would rate this event as DIFFICULT. NO DOGS or WHINERS. Be prepared to reimburse the drivers at the rate of $.10 per mile round trip or about $20 for the day. We will be required to stop at the Visitors Center in Grants for our caving permit. I've done this before and it's no big deal. For more information, leave your question on this site and I'll get back to you.
