Heather Clark, PhD, CCC-SLP, is chair of speech pathology in the Department of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Her clinical responsibilities include differential diagnosis of communication and swallowing disorders in adults and children. Over the past 20 years, her research has included a review of neuromuscular treatments, drawing heavily from the literature of related disciplines, including exercise physiology and physical rehabilitation. Through review of the neuromuscular physiology of the speech and swallowing musculature, Clark continues to explore the application of neuromuscular treatments to dysarthria and neurogenic dysphagia.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This full-day course will consider in detail the exercise-based treatments available to SLPs. Included in the discussion will be assessment to determine candidacy for exercise, a review of principles guiding exercise programs (e.g., intensity, dosage, combining treatments, on-going assessment), considerations of how setting and acuity influence decision-making about exercise-based interventions, descriptions of exercise programs organized by subsystem (respiratory, laryngeal, velopharyngeal, lingual, orofacial) and a review of evidence supporting exercise-based interventions for dysarthria and dysphagia for various patient populations.

Participants will be able to:

  • Use the ICF framework to guide assessment and selection of treatment targets
  • Develop an exercise program that incorporates neuromuscular principles and principles of motor learning
  • Identify the level of evidence available to support the use of exercise in the management of specific speech and swallowing deficits
