Time for Encinal Canyon, arguably the best ride in the Santa Monica Mountains. Some call the ride down from the Etz Motorway back to the car the best ride outside of Disneyland. You'll see why this Saturday.

Temperatures are forecast to be cool and perhaps a smidge of rain(??). Sounds Perfect!!

All new riders are requested to bring or email a signed waiver for Shepherd Church. You may get yours from either this link 2017 Shepherd Sports Waiver Sports Waiver or download a copy from the Church's website: Shepherd Sports Mountain Bike Club

We typically divide into three groups on any given ride:

Genesis: at the front, the beginning, are the Genesis guys and gals. Most all are either on competitive teams, or were, and riding with them will be a sweat-pouring, cardio-pushing, speed & tech fest that will leave advanced riders grinning ear to ear. Genesis isa DROP group, meaning you have to be able to keep up and not get lost if you can't.

Gospels: In the middle of the story are the Gospel guys and gals. Intermediates welcome. If you're on a Most Wanted list, avoid this group as they will post online an average of 50 pictures a ride. The Gospels are aNO DROP groupand usually go the same route as Genesis but at a more leisurely pace.

Revelations: our C group. Everyone was new to mountain biking once, so don't fret. We'll get you Gospel-ready in no time. Obviously, this is a NO DROP group.

By riding with the Shepherd Church Mountain Bike Club I understand and accept the following:

I understand that mountain biking can be dangerous and accidents can result in either injury or death.

I understand that it is my responsibility to determine if my riding skills match the difficulty of the trail we are riding on.

I understand that ride schedulers accept no responsibility for my safety on any ride, and that I undertake any ride knowing that I and I alone am responsible for my safety on the ride.

For this weekend we anticipate two durations of ride: One to the top of Etz for the view and the other all the way to Yerba Buena.

1100 Encinal Canyon Road, Malibu, CA 90265

From Thousand Oaks and points west, exit the 101 Freeway at Westlake Blvd and head south. About 3.5 miles past Potrero, turn left onto Mulholland and go 2.5 miles. Make a very sharp right turn onto Encinal Canyon Rd (west, back towards Decker), drive for 2.3 miles until you see the LA County Fire Camp sign on the left. Turn up the dirt road on the right, Clark Ranch Rd, that takes you to the trailhead parking.
From Agoura and points east, exit the 101 at Kanan and head south. After 6 miles, turn right onto Mulholland for 1 mile, then bear left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. After 2.3 miles more, you will see the LA County Fire Camp sign on the left. Turn up the dirt road on the right, Clark Ranch Rd, that takes you to the trailhead parking.

Ride Description: Encinal to Etz. (There is a longer ride, too, described below)

Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Ride Duration: About 1.5 hours moving time / Total ride time approximately 2.5 hours with breaks

Miles/Roundtrip: 8.2 miles

Bathrooms at Trail: None available

This ride has lots of swooping, curving singletrack and some great views! We start with a gentle climb up the new Encinal singletrack segment to the Decker/Mulholland singletrack segment of the Backbone Trail, cross Mulholland Hwy and continue up to Etz Meloy Motorway singletrack. Then well turn around and enjoy some fun downhill all the way back to the cars via the same route as before. It's 7.2 miles round trip and 850 feet of climbing.

Advanced ride: For those who want to keep riding Instead of turning around and coming back down to the parking lot, we can keep riding the Backbone all the way to Yurba Buena and back. The entire ride will turn into a 20 mile trek. (Yay!!!) It is know as the EASY 20 in MTB circles. (not for beginners. Don't let the word "Easy" confuse you.)

The 20 mile ride is for intermediates and advanced riders tends to be pretty fast and takes about 3:15 to complete. The Strava link for this is: Strava Encinal to Yerba Buena (

Relive of Encinal Canyon (computer animation of the ride)

IMPORTANT: Although some posted rides are considered intermediate to advanced level a strong beginner-level rider should be able to make it. As always, all riders should be aware that mountain biking can be extremely physically demanding. Each rider should be conscious of their own limitations. It is encouraged to walk any sections of the trail you are not comfortable riding. Dont be surprised if you are not able to keep up with the group your first time out. Dont get discouraged. It will take some newcomers a few rides before they can build up their leg strength, cardio and overall technique before feeling at home on a mountain bike trail. be encouraged We will have volunteers that will help you along the way and stay with you at your pace.
