This hike will be approximately 18 miles round trip with an elevation gain of almost 4500 feet. Expect a brisk pace of 2.8-3 mph (slightly faster on the return leg as it is mostly downhill).

We'll start at Dockery Lake and hike the Dockery Lake trail for just under 4 miles up to the AT. When we intersect with the AT, we'll head right (and up some more) for about 5 miles to the summit of Blood Mountain where we'll have stunning views of the nearby mountains and valleys. We'll take a lunch break here before turning around to head back down to the Lake. About 90% of the outbound leg is uphill.

Directions to Dockery Lake: Going up 60 towards Woody Gap look for the sign to Dockery Lake on the right. Drive 1 mile, pass through the campground, then stay right to reach the day-use parking area.

Please note: the final one-mile drive down Dockery Rd is gravel/dirt, has several potholes and goes downhill/uphill. While most vehicles can navigate this with no problem, just keep that in mind. The parking area is a level, gravel lot.
