A sizzling Shepherd MTB Club summer continues with a trip to the Foundation and Eagle Rock. Temps are forecast to be 100 degrees again, so we'll start at 6:30 to keep the "meltage" to a minimum. Tip: freeze two water bottles overnight and put them in your pack for mid-ride spritzes and cold sips at stops.

This ride has multiple options for all riders depending on desired effort and duration. Shown is the Foundation/Eagle Rock option, but trips down Backbone, over to Nike, and even out to Parker Mesa are all great add-ons.

All riders on Shepherd Cycling rides are asked to complete a waiver for the church. If you haven't yet completed a waiver, you can click this link:2017_Shepherd MTB Club waiver. Bring your signed waiver form with you to the ride or one will be provided for you to sign before the ride.

Ride Description:

Level:Beginner to Intermediate

Ride Duration:About 1.75 hours moving time / Total ride time approximately 2.75 hours with breaks
Ride times may very based on routes.

Miles/Roundtrip:9.6 miles

Bathrooms at Trail: Yes - there is a Porta-Potty Restroom located just shy of 1/4 into the ride located at the Hub Junction. Or if going to Nike site, then there are Porta-Potties at the Reseda Trail head (Marvin Braude Gateway Park entrance).

This ride begins at Greenbriar Dr. east of the Temescal Fireroad. We start with long section of climbing along a moderate incline which can be challenging for new riders. Most of the ride is along a wide fireroad. The route to the Nike site continues on the Dirt Mulholland road up to the Nike tower. The other routes lead to the Hub Junction. The most difficult section of this route is the climb to The Hub Junction where we can choose to take a short bathroom break. The trails continue with many options; to the Foundation along the Temescal fireroad, or Down through Topanga State Park and up to a beautiful ocean view at Parker Mesa Overlook (Intermediate and advanced conditioned riders only 19-20 mile route).

Crazy Person option: From the Foundation, there will be a ride down the slightly overgrown Backbone singletrack to the infamous, dropper-post required, pads recommended J Drop to Sullivan Canyon. From there some roads to Paseo Miramar, one of the SMMT Challenge rides, then back to the start point via Parker Mesa. This will be a big, tough ride, so bring extra water, food, and probably a bit of money to take a pit stop in Pacific Palisades. The ride will look similar to this:

Backbone to J Drop and up Sullivan: this Link shows the advanced Backbone-JDrop- Sullivan route that advanced riders can do. Strava Backbone-Sullivan. This is at 19 mile route that is about 2 hours of moving time with 3200 feet of climb. J Drop is a dropper-post requiring, pads recommended singletrack sure to pump the adrenaline of the most advanced. Even if you walk it.

IMPORTANT:Although some posted rides are considered intermediate to advanced level a strong beginner-level rider should be able to make it. As always, all riders should be aware that mountain biking can be extremely physically demanding. Each rider should be conscious of their own limitations. It is encouraged to walk any sections of the trail you are not comfortable riding. Dont be surprised if you are not able to keep up with the group your first time out. Dont get discouraged. It will take some newcomers a few rides before they can build up their leg strength, cardio and overall technique before feeling at home on a mountain bike trail. be encouraged We will have volunteers that will help you along the way and stay with you at your pace.
