McDowell Mountains - Gateway to Thompson Peak

Description: This is a fun and scenic, but strenuous, out-and-back hike that starts and ends at the Hieroglyphic Trail Head in Gold Canyon. The first 1.5 miles of the hike is fairly easy on the Hieroglyphic Trail to the petroglyphs. From that point on the hike gets progressively harder as we proceed up Hieroglyphic Canyon to the Superstition Ridgeline. Along the way the views of the canyon are awesome. There is quite a bit of boulder hopping, rock climbing, scrambling, and route finding along the way to the Superstition Ridgeline. Once on the ridgeline, we head southeast to Superstition Peak 5057 and along the way we will encounter quite a bit of rock climbing and scrambling on this section of the ridgeline. Once we get to the base of Superstition Peak 5057, we take a social trail up to the summit and enjoy the awesome views. Then we retrace our steps back to the trail head.
There is a group size limit of 15 hikers in the Superstition Wilderness. Thus, there will be a limit of 15 hikers for this hike.
A link to a description of the hike along with a GPS track is here:https://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=17340
There will be an optional gathering after the hike for food and/or beverages at the Bar and Grille at the Gold Canyon Golf Resort on 6100 South Kings Ranch Road in Gold Canyon. We will conveniently pass right by the Golf Resort on our way back from the hike.
Difficulty: This is one of the more difficult 8-9 mile hikes that you will do, and the hike will seem longer than that. As such, this hike is suitable only for experienced, fit hikers. Arizona Strong Hikers hikes tend to be at a faster pace than hikes in most Meetup hiking groups. However, I do not plan on setting any speed records for this hike. There is no designated sweep for this hike, although I plan to stop periodically and regroup anyone that is behind me; however, I will not be stopping for an extended period of time, except when we first get up to the ridgeline and when we get to the top of Superstition Peak 5057. Most hikers in this group tend to stay fairly close together, but if you are way ahead of or way behind the group, be prepared to self-navigate. Please feel free to ask if you have any questions about the hike.
