About Program

In this creative writing workshop, well learn skills to gather vivid material from the world outdoors in order to build essays or poems. As writers, well follow the path of our curiosity about nature and the environment. Participants will spend some time outdoors during the workshop in careful contemplation of place, practicing the art of observation. From these seeds, well construct writing that engages with imagery, knowledge, precision, science, memory, experience, and even research. As examples, well read work by Brian Doyle, Alison Hawthorne Deming, David Haskell, and others.

Associate Professor of English Mary Quade teaches creative writing, including poetry, creative nonfiction, fiction, and screenwriting. Her teaching philosophy is Get writers into the world. Get the world into writers. Quade says, The most helpful thing I can do for my students is get them to forget about having answers and instead think about questions. As a teacher, I stress that the best writing comes from interaction with the concrete stuff of life. I ask my students to start with this stuff, and grow to know its nature through curiosity.
