DAY HIKE: This is a MODERATE/STRENUOUS hike to the Colby Mountain overlook with a stop by the Grant Lakes on the return trip.
DIFFICULTY: About 14 Miles Starting at 7,000, Ending at just under 10,000, Elevation Gain 3,000
WHO CAN GO: Moderate to strong adult hikers in good physical condition. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on national park trails.
DESCRIPTION: Colby Mountain is a little known but beautiful overlook of the Ten Lakes Basin and the Grand Canyon of the Toulumne River in Yosemite NP. On the return trip we will stop by Lower Grant Lake and if any one is up to it maybe check out Upper Grant Lake. People can swim out to the small island in the middle of Lower Grant, so bring towel and bathing suit if interested
I plan on having dinner at Happy Burger in Mariposa on the way back.
If anyone should have any questions please feel free to contact me. DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD: The trailhead is on the north side of Highway 120 a little over 19 miles from the Crane Flat gas station. There is a parking lot and pit toilets on the south side of the highway.
EARLY START: This is an early start hike because it will take about 3 to 3.5 hours to reach the trailhead.
FEE: A $30.00 entrance fee is required per vehicle unless someone has a national park pass.
SUGGESTED GEAR/SUPPLIES: Hiking boots or shoes with good support and maybe water shoes if you should decide to take go swimming. Bring plenty of water 3 quarts/liters or so. Also lunch, snacks, sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and gloves (leather is nice). Hiking poles are encouraged. Bring a headlamp, in the unlikely event we are on the trail after sunset. 10 essentials always recommended (see REI for checklist). Dress accordingly: bring extra layers, including a jacket, warm/shady hat. Through it all, safety is paramount!
CAR POOLING: Is recommended. $15.00 to $20.00 per rider to assist with fuel and expenses is recommended, the exact amount to be determined by the driver.
FACILITIES AVAILABLE: Restrooms are also available at Vons, Highway 41 south park entrance, Chinquapin (Glacier Point Turn Off) and Crane Flat gas station (Highway 120 turn off).
