There is probably a name for the peak that rises above the south ridge of Chimney Canyon, but until someone corrects me, I will call it Chimney Peak (the rounded summit on the left side of this photo). The hike will go up the Chimney Canyon Trail but instead of taking a left (North) at the chimney we will head right (south) up a steep boulder field to the Chimney/La Cueva Canyon Saddle, where we will attempt to scramble up this fairly prominent peak. After bagging the peak, we will look for a way to reach the summit of Sandia Peak or head back down to the chimney and go up the Chimney Canyon trail chute and follow the Crest Trail to the tram. Hike should be in the 8 mile range with 3,700-5,000 feet of elevation gain depending on whether or not we have to descend back into Chimney Canyon.

If you choose to join me you should be comfortable with off-trail travel, steep slopes, rock scrambling, and bush whacking. I suggest wearing durable pants and bringing hiking poles.

We are meeting at the tram to spot a car.

Disclaimer: Hiking and scrambling have inherent dangers that could result in injuries or death. If you choose to join me, you agree to do so at your own risk.

Hike Time: The time to complete this hike is variable depending on the pace of the group, stops, and off-trail problems. Expect a full day (6-10 hours). If you have other engagements and a time deadline to complete the hike, this may not be the hike for you. I will not hike faster or shorten the adventure because of your time constraints.

How to find us:I'll be in or near my white Toyaota Tacoma with a matching camper shell and the Peak Freak (PKFREAK) plate. Look for my truck in the lower lot near near the trees
