Official Chicken Challenge Grill Competition Information & Rules

General Information:

The grills will be available for you to begin cooking on promptly at 8:00 AM. Please gauge the prep and cooking time needed to prepare your dish in order for it to be presented to the judges promptly at 2:00 PM. If you need to begin at 8:00 AM, staff will be on hand to check you in and get you started, however we do ask that all cooks be on hand no later than 10:00 AM to begin their set up. We ask that you provide chicken for judging (containers will be supplied to submit your sample).

Grill Competition Official Rules:

  • Contestants may cook individually or as part of a team. Please note that only one prize will be awarded for the winning chicken.
  • Contestant must choose at the time of registration whether they would like to compete on a Big Green Egg, Weber or Traeger grill. We will only allow 8 spots for each grill (on a first-come basis).
  • Chicken will not be available for preparation until 8:00 AM the day of the event.
  • Prizes will be awarded for Best Chicken on a Big Green Egg ($250 HH Gift Card), Best Chicken on a Weber ($250 HH Gift Card), Best Chicken on a Traeger ($250 HH Gift Card), with an additional $250 HH Gift Card awarded for Best in Show. Judging will be via a blind taste test.

All registered cooks will be provided with the following the day of the cook off:

  • 1 Large Big Green Egg on Nest with Plate Setter, 1 Weber Genesis II or 1 Traeger Pro 22
  • 1 Load of Charcoal, Propane or Hickory Pellets
  • 3 Whole Chickens
  • 1 4ft x 2.5ft Prep Table (You will share an 8ft table with another competitor)
  • 1 folding chair
  • Basic Sanitation Supplies
  • Sampling Containers & Utensils
  • Judging Container

You must provide:

  • All ingredients required to prepare your dish
  • Thermometer
  • BBQ tools
  • Oven mitts
  • Smoking wood if desired
  • Seasonings
  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • Foil
  • Paper towels
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Knives
  • Cutting boards
  • Any additional grilling accessories

Only 8 spots will be available for each grill brand category (Big Green Egg, Weber & Traeger). Registration is $30. All competitors will receive the following: Official GrillFest T-Shirt, GrillFest Apron, and one entry for a chance to win a GRILL of winners choice (up to $799 retail value). 100% of Proceeds from the competition will be donated to the Community with Heart Playground Fund for Ronald McDonald House-Akron, a non-profit facility providing temporary and long-term housing for patients of Akron Childrens Hospital and their families.
