Thisis Hike #1 in the fourth annual Charleston Summer Series. Each Saturday hike is progressively harder in elevation gain or distance and is designed to prepare you for a successful attempt of Charleston Peak at the end of the series.

For those of you unfamiliar with hiking at higher elevations, I will be providing guidance on pace, breathing and preparations so each hike is enjoyable.

This hike goes up the North Loop Trailto a highpoint at 10,000' elevation and proceeds through a magical twisted forest to the 3,000 year old Raintree bristlecone pine. The return route will take us down Wildhorse Canyon. The hike is 6 miles with 1,600' elevation gain and is allclass 1 trail except for a small amount of class 2 trail on the descent.Trekking pole(s) are helpful but not required. Be sure to bring a windbreaker, gloves and hat because it is generally cold when we take our break at the Raintree.

HIKE QUICK STATS:

Distance: 6 miles

Elevation gain: 1,600 feet

Difficulty: Strenuous

Duration: 6.5 hours including driving time

Pace: moderate

We will meet inSanta FeCasino southeast or eastparking garage 3rd floorsection 3F. There are two garages; one is visible from Hwy 95 (that is the wrong garage); the otheris near the intersection of Lone Mtn Road and Rancho (that is the correct garage). We will carpool to the North Loop Trailhead via Hwy 95N, SR 157 Kyle Canyon Road, and SR 158 Deer CreekRoad.
