CATSKILL 3500 BUSHWHACK HIKE
Fir, Big Indian, Eagle, and Balsam Mountains
McKinley Hollow Trailhead (https://www.google.com/maps/@42.0703318,-74.4737319,3a,75y,287.82h,72.93t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1saJrCJV8TTeU-de0yIa9Nzg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656)

RSVP Note: ALL RSVPs are to the wait list. I reserve the right to reserve spots for people I know to be reliable to attend. You will have the opportunity to join the week of the event.

*** This should only be attempted by experienced winter bushwhackers!!! The beginning of this hike is a grueling 2 mile stretch of nonstop elevation gain. You have been warned!!! ***

*** In addition to standard winter clothing/gear, you MUST have eye protection for the bushwhack, snowshoes/traction for the varied terrain we will face, and a headlamp in case we finish in the dark. If we have to break trail, everyone will be expected to assist in doing so. If you do not have the proper gear, you will not be allowed to hike with us. ***

8-10 hours (12 miles/4000 feet gain)
The DEC limits group sizes in the Catskills to 20.

We will meet at McKinley Hollow and then do a quick shuttle to the Burnham Hollow Trailhead where we will start our hike. From there we start a grueling 2 mile / 2000' ascent to the summit of Fir, which will be the hardest part of the hike. We then backtrack a bit and follow the Catskill Divide for a more relaxed 1.75 miles to the Big Indian summit, and then a few minutes later we'll be on trails the rest of the hike. After going 2.3 miles north on the Blue trail, we'll "bushwhack" a short 0.04 miles to the actual summit of Eagle and then continue back on Blue for another 3 miles to hit Balsam. From there, it's 2.7 miles back to the car spot, all downhill.

Afterwards, we will likely head to Brio's in Phoenicia for a celebratory meal and drinks.

WARNING REGARDING BUSHWHACKS: "Bushwhacks" are hikes that go off of maintained trails and through pure wilderness. Please make sure you are very confident in your ability to navigate through the woods without trails since it is very easy to get lost in these forests, especially in the summer. Map & Compass REQUIRED. GPS is also recommended, but it is not a substitute for a map & compass and the skills to use them effectively.
