The most important tool to drive electric vehicle adoption is an incentive that lowers the purchase cost of the vehicles. Georgias experience demonstrates this: sales dropped nearly 90% when its incentive was eliminated.

Washington state has a sales tax exemption for select models of new electric and plug-in hybrids, which has helped it emerge as a leading market. However, the Washington Legislature will need to act quickly to extend this tax exemption, which includes a cap of 7,500 vehicles and is currently set to expire as early as February 2018.

At our January event in Seattle, we will discuss why these incentives are important for the advancement of clean transportation, and the current work in Washington to extend and expand these incentives. Our guest speaker is Dr. Scott Hardman from the Plug-In Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Research Center at the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies. Dr. Hardman will discuss the Centers findings that show how important these incentives are for electric mobility advancement and why they are driving the market.

Guest Speaker

Dr. Scott Hardman, Postdoctoral Researcher, UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies

Scott is a postdoctoral researcher at the Plug-in Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Research Center, at the Institute of Transportation Studies, University of California Davis. Scott's researchis focused on the consumer adoption of low carbon and innovative vehicle technologies including hybrid, electric, fuel cell, and connected and autonomous vehicles. At UC Davis, he coordinates the International EV Policy Council, a global initiative that works towards bringing together academics from around the world to develop recommendations that policymakers can use to grow electric vehicle markets.
