You can come on this trip and not use a kayak but take the Ferry Service from Harker's Island to get you to Cape Lookout. $20 round trip. About 2.5 miles and not get your feet wet. All you need is a duffel bag that will hold a sleeping bag/mat, tent and clothing. A backpack is preferred.
Yes, it can be colder but most of the bugs are gone. 60 degree sun on the beach feels like 80. More detail later on what to bring.
If you don't have it, you can rent it for cheap at UVA's Outdoor Rec Center.
There will be some of us, weather permitting, that will paddle over but you need some skill and a proper kayak. The details of this is handled best by private messaging me.
We will leave Charlottesville November 9 at 7 am and carpool the best we can. The drive is a long 5.5 hours but worth it. The goal is to be on the road by 7 am have lunch and catch a 2pm ferry. We will return by Ferry late morning on the 11th and be heading back to C'ville by 2 pm.
Once on the island after you pitch your tent and get set up, you are free to do what you want. You have 50 miles of beach and sound to explore and some very old abandoned homes. The hiking and shelling are superb...not to mention you get to sleep at the base of my favorite diamond patterned lighthouse and witness one of the largest tidal shoals on the planet.
As we get close, we will talk about food and how we can share that expense. It doesn't get better than this. You do not have to be in super shape and you can just sit on you arse on the beach all day and watch the birds and dolphins if you prefer. This trip is weather related. We need calm weather as the Ferry's will not run if the wind is above 20 knots. It may cancel last minute but you will have no money invested. Just do your best to make it once you commit.
Please let me know if you have any questions. How to find us:Meet at Wegmans parking lot ( Pub ) right side at 7:00 am.
