Skyline Trail (AKA "Cactus to Cloud") was rated America's 5th hardest dayhike by Backpacker magazine. The entire hike is 21 miles and 10,800ft of elevation gain. It starts on the desert floor at the Palm Springs Art Museum and climbs all the way to San Jacinto Peak, and then back down to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway (you get to ride the tram back down...perfect for those of you who love to climb up, but hate to climb down!).

Here is a good write-up on the C2C hike:

Please note it could be very hot in the desert, and there could be snow near the peak! Here's the plan:

Friday, May 11: Drive to Palm Springs after work and stay in a hotel near the Palm Springs Art Museum (there are no campgrounds near the trailhead, but a few affordable hotels). I plan to stay at Best Western Inn at Palm Springs, where I stayed last time. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO ARRANGE YOUR OWN HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS AND CARPOOLING!!! Saturday, May 12th: Wake up very early and start our climb to San Jacinto Peak. The hike will likely take all day. We will have a celebratory dinner, then go back to our hotel rooms and crash for the night. I tentatively set the start time for 5am. However, we could start earlier if the weather is hot. You are welcome to start earlier (on your own) if you wish to get a headstart.

Sunday, May 13th: Drive back to Phoenix If I haven't scared you away and you'd like to join me, please sign up on the waitlist. Due to the difficulty, I will screen all participants to make sure they are well suited for the hike. I will move qualified hikers to the "going" list. To qualify for this hike:

- I must know you. If I don't know you, I will ask for a recommendation from other hike leaders.

- You must be an active and reliable BCH member. If you have a history of "flaking out" on past hikes, don't expect to get on this one!

- You must ALREADY be in shape for this hike. I have many great training hikes already on the calendar - please plan to participate in at least a few of these.

- You must be self sufficient and able to hike on your own (DON'T EXPECT ANYONE TO WAIT ON YOU!)
