What we'll do
The Hike: Whether or not youre training for the One Day Hike (ODH), wont you join us for a 25-mile or 13-mile out-and-back go-at-your-own-pace hike along the unpaved C&O Canal towpath north of Whites Ferry? This is the final tune-up before the ODH on April 21; those training for the 100K should do the longer version; those training for the 50K, the shorter version. If youre not training, you may choose either version, or any distance in between. Either way, youll be treated to pleasing views of the Potomac River. And this time of year, lovely spring wildflowers, such as Dutchmans breeches, Squirrel corn, Narcissus, and Virginia bluebells adorn the towpath. Its also not uncommon to spot a bald eagle soaring above the river. Besides providing a final tune-up, this hike is meant to familiarize 50Kers with the starting point of their hike on April 21, and it is considered strenuous due to its length. Well go, rain or shine.

Meeting Place: 8:00 am at the Whites Ferry parking lot (Maryland side!). This involves a long drive down winding country roads, so allow plenty of time to arrive at the trailhead, and watch out for multiple speed traps along the way, particularly in and around Poolesville.

Leaders: Gary Kosciusko, [masked],[masked] (before 9pm), or[masked] (on day of the hike only!); and Dave Torraca, [masked] or[masked]-3377.

ODH: Although open to all, this hike is part of a series of Saturday training hikes leading up to the One Day Hike (ODH)100 or 50 km along the C&O Canalon April 21, 2018. Registration is now closed, but there may be last-minute openings depending on cancellations. For general information about the ODH, go to www.onedayhike.org. For official updates regarding possible registration openings and other information, join the ODH Yahoo discussion group by sending a blank email to [masked] and Like us on Facebook. If you would like to volunteer to help support the ODH, contact Mike Darzi ([masked]).

What to bring
Bring water and/or other non-alcoholic beverage, a bag lunch and snacks. Since you'll be on the trail for many hours, bring attire suitable for the forecasted weather. Sturdy running/walking shoes, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are also recommended.

Important to know
Each person must sign a liability waiver in order to participate. Sierra Club Potomac Region Outings requests a voluntary donation of $2 per person to help support our all-volunteer program.
