William Hamilton Merritt was creator of the Welland Canal. The Merritthon is a trek approximately 45km along the first historic canal route. The hike begins at Port Colborne, follows the Welland Canal and moves onto the Merritt Trail in St Catharines to finish in Port Dalhousie. You can expect to keep pace with giant laker ships, see industrial remnants, murals and enjoy woods and streets along the way. Follow the YELLOW blazes.

This is an endurance hike. It may take 7-10hrs to complete this distance, depending upon your abilities & is not suitable for beginner hikers. You should be able to hike at a pace of 4.5km/hr+

Registration is $30. Fee covers bus transfers, snacks, water check points and a badge! Register online with eventbrite.

Are there membership requirements to enter the event?

This event is open to members and non-members of the Niagara Bruce Trail Club. This is an endurance hike on mostly gravel/paved pathways.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Park in the Lakeside Park, Port Dalhousie, parking lot near the Carousel. A bus will take you to Port Colborne where you will begin the hike. This is a self-guided hike. You will be walking north along the canal toward Port Dalhousie, following YELLOW blazes. Please check-in by 6:45am.

What can I bring into the event?

The hike will go on rain/shine/snow. Bring appropriate clothing, comfortable shoes, water and snack. There are check points along the way where you can re-fill your water bottle and enjoy tasty snacks. A change of socks is a good idea. The hike may take 7-10 hrs depending on your abilities.

If I feel I can't finish, can I drop out of the event?

There are four mandatory checkpoints. It is YOUR responsibilty to ensure that you've been noted at these checkpoints. If you have to leave the trail, let a checkpoint volunteer know that you will not be continuing.

What's the refund policy?

There are no refunds. Make sure you are available for November 9. The hike takes place rain/shine/snow.
