What we'll do
Hi Marathoners!
Nice job on the tough 12 mile trail run on Saturday! This is a step back week before we start increasing our long runs again. We'll run 10 miles on a FLAT out and back course starting at Tri City Park. We'll start at 7 AM because the park opens at that time. Here is a link to the course. Please take a look at it before Saturday morning. https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/16888507 We'll run east on Golden, Right on McCormack, Left on Bastanchury, reight on the bike trail just before Rose Drive. Follow the bike trail across Rose and continue to the Nixon Library. Cross Yorba Linda Blvd. at the light. Stay on the trail and follow it through the tunnel under Lakeview, make a hairpin right turn on Lakeview over Imperial Hwy. Turn right on the bike trail and follow it until it ends at Grandview. Then turnaround and return the way you came. There are restrooms at Tri City Park and at the Yorba Linda Community Center. You can also refill water bottles at the Community Center. The forecast calls for mild temps and light rain on Saturday. Of course, that may change. This course is on asphalt, so we don't have to worry about trails being wet or traffic while we are on the trail. Here is our schedule this week:
Monday 40 min strength & conditioning
Tuesday - 4 miles medium pace + 20 min S&C
Wednesday - Off (advanced runners - 6 mile tempo run)
Thursday - 4 miles medium + 20 min S&C
Friday - Off
Saturday - 10 miles
Sunday 3 easy - shake out run

We'll increase our long runs 2 miles a week for the next 4 weeks, topping this cycle with a 16 mile run on 12/23/17. We were originally scheduled for the Margarita Run that week, but since Monrovia doesn't have a marathon group, the Margarita Run is cancelled. Instead, let's start a little earlier that Saturday and have a breakfast to celebrate the holiday and our gains for the month. Now a little philosophy:
When I started running in 1977, I picked up the book, The Complete Book of Running, by Jim Fixx. I wanted to learn about running, how to train, and how to enjoy something I really never liked. He addresses the physiologic aspects of running, quoted experts, etc. but a lot of the book focuses on the question "why do this?" I think he concludes with an interesting summary. "My suspicion is the effects of running are not extraordinary at all, but quite ordinary. It is the other states, all other feelings, that are peculiar, for they are an abnegation of the way you and I are intended to feel...We are reasserting, as modern man seldom does, our kinship with ancient man, and even with the wild beasts the preceded him. This , I think is our remarkable secret, one we share every time we go running."

We all have our reasons for starting to run, and we all have reasons we continue. My reasons for continuing are pretty simple, running makes me feel "right" again. Maybe in a similar way that Jim Fixx describes it in his book.

Have a good week. See you Saturday!
Coach Bill
