A pleasant walk through a nature preserve and along a river to the beach is the main feature of this beginner hike. We will enjoy a shady city park, a nature sanctuary in the process of restoration, salt marshes, a wide river, and a sunny beach at the edge of the ocean.

We will begin at Canyon Park in Costa Mesa, minutes from Huntington Beach. Our route crosses the park into the Talbert Nature Preserve where we will enjoy a variety of natural landscapes. The trail will meet the Banning Bike Path along the Santa Ana River which we will follow to the sea. Depending on the tide, we will either wade under the Pacific Coast Highway Bridge or crawl for about a hundred feet through sand before we stop at Banning Beach before returning. We will take a different route through the Talbert Nature Preserve before returning to our starting point.

DETAILS

Distance: The hike is about 4 miles long. It should take us about 1 to 2 hours round trip.

Difficulty: Easy. The trails are flat. Some are paved and others are dirt.

Facilities: There are no facilities along this route.

Gear: Good shoes, hat, a towel, and shorts. Swimsuit optional. (We will be wading at one point.)

Pets: You can bring your dog! Leash is required.

DIRECTIONS:

From the 55: Head south on the 55 to Victoria. Turn right. At Placentia, turn left. Turn left on 19th Street and right at the second stop sign which is Whittier. Turn RIGHT on Arbor and left into Canyon Park.

From Huntington Beach: Head east on Hamilton. After Hamilton crosses the Santa Ana River, it turns into Victoria. Turn right on Monrovia, then left on 19th. Turn right at Whittier, then RIGHT on Arbor. Canyon View Park is on the right.

We will meet at the trailhead next to the parking lot at the end of the road. It looks like this:
