Perhaps you've watched curling during the Winter Olympics and thought to yourself, "Now that's a sport I could compete in!" Put that confidence to the test and join Atlas Obscura Society Seattle for an afternoon of curling fun at the Granite Curling Club.

Best thought of as a giant game of shuffleboard on ice, curling involves two teams taking turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, across the ice toward a circular target on the other end. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a game, with stones closest to the center of the target acquiring points. View an introductory video to curling here.

Our four-hour event will equip you with everything needed for some friendly curling competition including, guaranteed lane availability, stones, brooms, grippers, sliders, and stabilizers. Our event will start with a private one-hour instruction on the rules, technique, and curling lingo necessary for competition. We will then break into teams to give everyone a chance to throw stones, sweep, and keep score.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

Well meet at the Granite Curling Club at 1440 N 128th Street, Seattle, WA 98133.
Please arrive by 12:45 to ensure appropriate time to fill out necessary forms.
Each participant will need to sign liability waivers.
The temperature on the ice will be between 40 and 42 degrees Fahrenheit.
Curlers under 18 years of age must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian before going on the ice. Children under 12 require a waiver, their own bicycle helmets, and adult supervision at all times.
The event will last approximately four hours in total. While participants are not required to remain for the full four hours, we are unable to pro rate tickets for any time spent at the event under four hours.
This event is best suited for people without mobility restrictions.
Restrooms are available inside the curling club.
A small snack bar inside the curling club has snacks available for purchase for an additional cost.
There is ample space to watch people on the ice from inside the curling club.

WHAT TO WEAR:

A pair of shoes with clean, flat, rubber soles with no metal hooks that can scratch the ice (clean tennis shoes are ideal).
Comfortable loose-fitting clothing (it is difficult to curl in tight jeans).
Dress in layers with a light jacket, sweater, or sweatshirt (initially it will be chilly on the ice, but you can get quite warm once play begins).
A ski hat and gloves may be appropriate if you chill easily.
