Artefact: The Technique of Culture Creation

In a world where culture is mediated, and where individuals are isolated, Artefact brings the instruction of the Technique of Christian Culture to a community level.

The Common Worship
The Common Work
The Common Feast

A life rich with meaning and purpose is the product of attending to the three elements of Christian Culture listed above. Working to help participants enrich these three elements in their own lives and the lives of those around them is the core mission of Artefact.

Artefact Louisville is a collaboration between the Climacus Conference and the newly founded Artefact Institute. This Artefact Event will incorporate lectures, individual instruction, workshops, and performances in the following disciplines as components of the Artefact Culture Creation model.

  • Music - choral conducting and ensemble singing; folk music (singing and instrumental); folk dancing
  • Storytelling - narrative crafting; public speaking, toasts; live storytelling
  • Conviviality - interior design; food preparation and styling; planning and hosting a Feast

Artefact Louisville participants may enroll as a conductor, a singer, a writer, or a general participant.

What is Artefact?

Artefact is a new concept in culture creation. The Artefact Institute is a collective of artists and crafters and thinkers who work with partipants on a technical level to create new, live, immersive experiences involving liturgy, visual art, music, literature, storytelling, architecture, craft, and conviviality. Artefact experts can teach you the "how" of Christian Culture in the same program as we discuss the "why".

Why should I attend?

At Artefact Louisville you will have an experience that will help you to understand how to create culture in your own community and family. You will connect deeply with fellow participants, bonding while creating something truly beautiful, to the Glory of God.

Building on the foundation of deep and meaningful discussion that the Climacus Conference became known for, you will get to talk in detail about why culture creation is important, and why specific elements are essential. Then, uniquely, you will get to put those words into action by bringing into reality the subject of your discussions. Your enjoyment of these elements will be enhanced by your new intimate understanding of the technique used to create them. And the significance of the technique will be all the more clear.

You will engage with leaders in the liturgical arts, including musicians, writers, pastors, architects, designers, craftsmen, event coordinators, and public speakers. It will be a place to get inspired and learn about the best art, ideas, and resources in the American Orthodox Christian community, whether you are an Orthodox Christian yourself or not.

This conference will bring you closer to your fellow brothers and sisters as you learn important practical community building techniques and you put those techniques into action. We encourage participants to attend with friends or family so as to share this profound experience.
