Sarah Lawrence College Art of Teaching Graduate Program
The Art of Teaching: Teaching & Learning for the Classroom Professional
2017 2018 Art of Teaching Saturday Seminar Series
Dewey, Democracy and Experience in Education:
Just as the senses require sensible objects to stimulate them, so our powers of observation, recollection, and imagination do not work spontaneously, but are set in motion by the demands set up by current social occupations. The main texture of disposition is formed, independently of schooling, by such inuences. What conscious, deliberate teaching can do is at most to free the capacities thus formed for fuller exercise, to purge them of some of their grossness, and to furnish objects which make their activity more productive of meaning.
John Dewey, Democracy and Education: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Education
The fee for participating in each week of the series is $25. Sarah Lawrence College is pleased to offer one Sarah Lawrence College credit for participation in the full seminar series for an additional cost of $100. You must attend all four Saturdays to receive the credit (we have in the past scheduled a make-up day if a conflict occurs for a number of participants). An official Sarah Lawrence transcript will be issued upon request to those who complete the series.
