Some of my hikes include much historical commentary, and others are primarily just hikes. This one is in the former category so expect to make frequent stops to discuss the historical sites we'll come by.

Here's a link to photos and stories about Monument Avenue.

Here's a map of our 3.8 mile 4 hour 14 min. Monument Avenue history hike we completed Sept. 9, 2017.

You'll learn things you didn't hear in your high school history class about each of the men and their memorials on Monument Avenue.

You'll hear the story about the missing sculpture from 2601 Monument Avenue.

You'll explore "Devil's Triangle" where during the 1970s and 80s drunken fights, drugs and prostitution were common, and clients were required to check their guns and hand grenades at the doors of the bars.

You'll see the Benedictine Prep School, Home for Confederate Women, and the Confederate Memorial Chapel. You'll walk through one of the galleries of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and then do the same at the Virginia Historical Society.

On our return we'll have a meal at My Noodle Restaurant located at our Stuart Circle starting point.

Parking is available on the 1st level of the parking structure across Lombardy Street from One Monument Avenue apartments and behind the First English Lutheran Church.

The address of the church is 1603 Monument Ave, Richmond, VA 23220.

All first level spaces are good for you to park on Saturday morning when the First English Lutheran Church isn't having a function EXCEPT those spaces reserved for Laurel Hill and marked with one of these two signs.

To repeat the above, do not park in spaces reserved for Laurel Hill. All others on the first level are ok.

There should be plenty of parking in the ok spaces on the first (street) level, but overflow additional parking can also be made available on the 4th (top) level. Arrangements can be made to open the auto security gate separating the 1st level from the levels above if necessary.

We will assemble here at the front of One Monument Avenue Apartments.
