CRABTREE FALLS, considered the most beautiful of waterfalls in Va. It is the tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi and a must see for anyone in the Mid - Atlantic region. The falls are named after William Crabtree, who settled in the area in 1777. The Tye River, at the bottom of the falls, is named after Allen Tye, who did extensive exploration in the local blue Ridge Mountains. I love waterfalls and this is the first in a series I will organize.

If you're a beginner, Crabtree Falls is a good introduction to mountain hiking. The trail is challenging but doable, easy to navigate, and plenty of views of the waterfalls. It is one of the most popular hikes in the region and is a 4 1/2 miler with an elevation gain of 1400 ft. The trail terrain is dirt, steep slippery and rocky in places. The difficulty is moderate for a mountain hike please don't compare to a moderate hike in the park. It's not the same. Please consider your ability before signing up. This hike isn't suggested for people with recent injuries. You need to be able to keep up with the group. With the number of people attending there will not be a sweeper. There will be to many people with various abilities. I don't think it's fair for me to ask for a sweeper to stay so far back and not be able to stay with the group. The trail is easy to follow for those that go on a slower pase . You will need to carpool in like groups please. People will be finishing at different times so devide up in slower pase, people leaving as soon as finished and going to picnic at winery. The finish time can only be estimated because of the different variables. So my guess if leaving as soon as finished Mayen be back to Macy's by four if you are in the main group. If you are going to picnic and winery combo 6:30 ish May I suggest you attending my mountain training hike.

Dress for the weather, it could be cold early and warm up in the afternoon. Protect your extremities and dress in layers. Wear sturdy well broken in hiking shoes. Bring day pack with plenty of water, snack, lunch, sunscreen, insect repellent , rain gear and basic first aide kit.
Please share the cost for gas to your driver. About $15 would be a good amount for gas and the $3 parking fee. Arrive between 6:30 and 6:45 so we can establish the carpooling and leave 7:00 SHARP!!!!!

The winery that we will be having our picnic is POLLAK VINEYARDS. It is less than 45 minutes from Crabtree Falls. It is between Charlottesville and Wintergreen so it's on the way back to Richmond. The beautiful scene setting is a pond and Blue Ridge Mountains. Please bring a dish to share, beverage , blanket or chair. We would have to stager the wine tasting since we have such a large group. With the large amount of people we may not have counter space to taste test anyway. The good news is we will be able to purchase wine there to drink even if we can't taste test. The winery closes its gate at 5:30 sharp so we need to finish before that time. We need to leave Crabtree falls by 2:30 to enjoy 2 hours at the winery. SO WE WILL NEED TO KEEP MOVING!!!

How to find us:Meet at Macy's parking lot behind Applebees Resturant. We will car pool from there. Please pay driver $15 per rider and divide the park entrance fee.
