Title: Teach Every Student to Think Like a Mathematician

Description: Teaching all students to think and reason is perhaps the greatest challenge we face as math educators. The eight standards for mathematical practices found in the Common Core Standards for Mathematics are our best articulation to date of what it means to think (and work!) like a mathematician. This session will offer a framework for making sense of the mathematical practices, images of what they look in action, and strategies for developing them in all students.

Breakout Sessions We are planning for up to 60 breakout sessions throughout the day.

These sessions will be lead by national leaders and presenters as well as our colleagueswho are practicing teachers and leaders on

a wide range of topics.

Please go to closer to the conference to view sessions and plan out your day!!

  • AATM and AML are pleased to join together to offer you a full-day session,Routines for Reasoning: Fostering Math Thinking and Teaching Practices, with Grace Kelemanik on Friday, Sept. 15. Registration will open at 7:30 and session runs from 8:30 - 3:30 including lunch. Grace will focus onensuring that all students develop powerful mathematical practices, and that all teachers develop powerful math teaching practices. Registration is $160. Complimentary membership to AATM, AML and either NCTM or NCSM will be provided upon registration.

Title: Routines for Reasoning: Fostering Math Thinking and Teaching Practices

Description: If we are to prepare our students for the world ahead of them we must teach them to think and reason mathematically. This means ensuring that all students develop powerful mathematical practices, and it will require that all teachers develop powerful math teaching practices. Practices are habits and habits are formed through routine, so instructional routines become powerful vehicles for developing both math thinking and math teaching practices.

In this session, you will learn about Routines for Reasoning, a set of instructional routines intentionally designed to develop habits of thinking articulated in the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practices in ALL students. Specifically, you will learn:

  • o About three avenues of mathematical thinking found in the Standards for Mathematical Practice, and dive deeply into one of those avenues, structural thinking
  • o The Instructional Routine, Contemplate then Calculate, designed to develop structural thinking
  • o Design features and teacher moves embedded in the Contemplate then Calculate routine that foster structural thinking in ALL students
  • o How the Contemplate then Calculate routine can be used to develop the 8 NCTM Effective Math Teaching Practices

  • TODOSwill once again be hosting their annual Pre-Conference dinner. They invite all members of AATM and all conference participants to join them for this event! The event runs from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m on FRIDAY, September 15.
