What: Bag 1 peak & 3 little peaklets: San Jac, Jean, Folly, & Newton-Drury with both on trail & off trail hiking. Join us as we travel to the charming mountain town of Idyllwild to stop at the Forrest Service office (7:50 AM ish) for bathrooms & a permit before driving north of town to our Marion Mountain campground trailhead (8:30 AM ish) where we'll hike up the Marion Mountain trail (starting around 8:40 AM ish) passing Little Round Valley & then on to Folly & San Jacinto Peak (10,834') where we'll stop for a long lunch break & to enjoy the great 360 degree view. We'll then leave the trail to hike mainly cross-country (off trail) over to Jean Peak (10,670'), & then Newton-Drury (10,160') before descending cross-country down to catch the Marion Mtn. trail back to our starting point. This mountain hike at altitude is designed to give us an enjoyable day "out n' about", + some off trail hiking to escape the crowds at San Jac peak, as well as a chance to acclimate for future summer & fall mountain hikes in SoCal and the Sierra's.

Details:This hike is only approximately 13 miles long with around 5,000' of elevation gain (uphill), BUT please note that it will hike harder than that due to the steepness of the Marion Mtn. trail (first 2.5 miles) & then the cross-country / off trail portion of the hike to the 3 little peaklets (several hours). Estimated hiking time is around 8:40 AM - 6:45 ish PM with a long break at San Jac peak (1 hr?) to enjoy the views & have lunch. Optional dinner stop in Idyllwild afterwards for those interested.

Bring:eithera minimum of 3.5 - 4 quarts or liters of H2O with electrolytes (if 4, have 1 in a bottle you can drop off along the way up and pick up later on the way out to lighten your load) ... or better yet / instead ... bring 2 quarts or liters and either a water filter or a steri pen to treat water at the spring on the way up to San Jac peak near Little Round Valley and again late in the day on the way back down; snacks to eat WHILE MOVING, "real food" for the early afternoon long lunch - check out the "tourons"break at the peak, some light layers for any wind up high (wind breaker or jacket or fleece, beanie, gloves, etc.); hat / sunglasses / sunscreen, a headlamp (very unlikely, but just in case), any first aid items / "drugs"you might need, poles & gaiters can be helpful, etc. Pre-hydrate by drinking ahead of time all day Fri. & again in the AM Sat. & on the drive to the hike.

My hiking style:we'll stay together as a group for both camaraderie & safety; we snack & drink WHILE WE MOVE except for short bathroom breaks or filtering of water as necessary & the occasional picture; I'll take around a 1 hour break at San Jac peak to eat real food / check out the people / enjoy the views in the early afternoon; I'll hike at a steady / continuous / bit faster then average pace when moving.
