The New Jersey Interscholastic Cycling Leagues annual Leaders Summit will bring together coaches, assistant coaches, ride leaders, and parent volunteersboth new and experiencedto develop skills and knowledge, share strategies, and build community. In 2016 New Jersey made history by providing the opportunity for every Middle and High School, public or private, to form club teams and participate in a scholastic mountain bike season brought to you by the New Jersey league, an official project League of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). This conference will build upon the inaugural season's successes and continue to promote a holistic approach to coaching that creates an environment in which young people can grow and thrive.
Being New Jersey's second season, the focus of the 2017 Leaders Summit will be twofold; for new coaches (Those who have not attended a summit or 101 Skills course) to the NICA family, we will concentrate on tools needed to establish your team and build community. For returning coaches (completed 101/Summit/First Aid/CPR), we will build upon 2016s incredible inaugural season and help you progress to higher levels of coaching and team success while providing ground breaking NICA instruction to progress your license levels.
The Leaders Summit will arm you with the knowledge, skills and resources available to assist you in establishing an official club sport at your local Middle or High School. With over 500 NICA teams across 19 Leagues in 18 States in the US, we don't have to reinvent any wheels in New Jersey. Currently over 10,000 Student-Athletes participate in Leagues across the country with League growth averaging 35% every year, this is an exciting time for kids and adult mentors in New Jersey to be a part of the fastest growing youth mountain bike program in the US.
Our coaches are primarily responsible for our growth. We have over 4000 licensed coaches nationwide and the number continues to go up. Why? Our coaches are engaged in their communities, they are finding value in playing the role of mentor, and they are getting fit while having a good time on bikes. That is amazing!- Austin McInerny, NICA National President
Team formation and official registration starts this fall. Pre-season begins October 15th. In-season practices can start December 1st. Our racing season will run from April through June of 2018, with race venues located across the state.
Saturday's seminars cover the nuts and bolts of working with student athletes in the context of a NICA mountain bike club. Returning coaches will share experiences during joint networking sessions, and break out for On-The-Bike Skills 101 (OTB101)instruction and skills throughout the day. We will close the day with a group ride for more networking and group ride skills discussions.
Returning coaches will receive NICA approved first aid instruction provided by SOLO, the oldest continuously operating school of wilderness medicine in the world. Our summit will be the first offering of this training nationwide, which fulfills requirements for level 3 coaches, NICAs highest level of certification.
